[SOLVED] Google Chrome - 39 tabs OPEN!

So I have my chrome to open with 8 set web pages, it's been like this for some time. In the last few days, things were at a crawl on the net. I performed a ctrl+alt+delete and clicked on task manager. On running processes, I noticed my 8 tabs are now at 39, but without any more than 8 showing.

Any ideas if these are background ads or something acting as a "open tab"?

could look at the Chrome task manager
open the 3 dot menu for Chrome and choose tools/task manager
it will show what resources each thing in Chrome is using, might reveal what difference is

I have 2 tabs open and 16 tasks for Chrome in task manager, it doesn't always make sense. All your extensions have a task as well.
