Whenever a new web page loads, my CPU spikes at about 90%.

In Chrome's own Task Manager, it's the "Browser" entry that uses the cpu, which for some reason only goes up to 30% even tho the overall CPU usage of my system is much higher as stated above.

It doesn't happen immediately when the web page loads.
First, the page loads, then after about 1 second, in Windows task manager the CPU goes almost all the way to 100%. At this stage the web page is frozen and I have to wait 3-5 seconds to be able to use it.

I have tried disabling extensions and HW accel to no avail.
I have also cleaned my computer fans and heat sinks.

What's left to try?

I'm using Win7 x64 and browser is Chromium 47.0.2526.73 x86 but this has gone on for several months now.

Fun fact: I used Maxthon browser several years ago, and when it started becoming slow and trying all sorts of solutions i switched to Firefox. Firefox worked well for a few years and then this browser, too, started giving me the finger on a daily basis. That's why I switched to Chromium a few years ago... which is now behaving very similarly to my previous browsers....

Some web pages are just plain awful and don't work well in any browser, on high end machines. They abuse the ability to put multiple CPU intensive objects on the page. You can't overpower those pages and you can't fix them. It's going to be up to web browser software coders to find a solution to that.

If you don't like the performance of your web browser on a particular site, try a different browser.

I keep more than one browser installed as there really is no perfect browser.

If you haven't gone the reasonably obvious route of ad-blocking, it may be worthwhile for the sites that are spiking your CPU usage.

Also, since you're using a 64-bit version of Windows, a 64-bit browser would most certainly perform better, however it may not support the extensions you want to use.

What happens if you browse in Chrome's incognito mode?

Another obvious place to check is your anti-virus. Most of them also offer some sort of web browsing "protection service". When you browse to a new site, it intercepts the request, pauses the page load which it checks with its servers if the site is "clean", then allows the page to continue loading if it reports as clean. I usually just turn it off because it causes lag like you're reporting.

For future reference and future readers, I will clarify teh following:

1. I have browsed incognito. No problems there... but when I disable all extension in normal mode, it still spikes.
2. I have disabled my antivirus, first disabled the web shield, then turned it off compeltely, this did actually help about 2%, not surprisingly. Even tho Webroot prides themselves on having a small footprint, I think 2% cpu taxation, is quite big for every page load.

Here's the good part:
I have disabled all extensions, and am now enabling them one by one. For some reason, this seems to work.... I have 2 extensions left to enable. Crossing my fingers lol. These extensions are EMojify and Font Changer .

A side-note is that qbittorrent often uses 10 per cent of my CPU. I don't know if it's related, but perhaps there's an over-arching issue with my Windows 7 installation that inreases teh risk of CPU hogs. Alternately it could be my motherboard. It's getting worse and worse, I have several buses that don't work and now my mini PCI bus is starting to faulter as well... So my mobo is a plausible factor
