Question Google Chrome freezes when left-click URL to copy to desktop

I rebooted. I don't have anything else open. Task Manager shows low resource use. I only have 15 tabs open. I left-click on the URL to drag it to the desktop. The first few times it works. Then, the process freezes on me. It won't release the URL to the desktop. I move the cursor arrow back and forth, and it shows that I have the URL selected (the box made of dotted lines below the cursor arrow). But it won't release it. And it won't let me do anything else. I have to go back into TaskManager and end task on Google and start over.

Anyone experience this? Any solutions?

It's the HP Envy with Windows 11 23H2.

As a test, open a Chrome Incognito window and try again from there. Does it work in that mode or not? If it does then it's almost certainly a rogue Chrome extension of yours that's the culprit.

It was worse with Incognito. I got the circle cursor where dragging the URL was blocked.

It was worse with Incognito.

It doesn't sound like a Chrome problem but rather something else is interfering with what you're trying to do.

As a further test, click the three dots top-right -> Cast, save & share -> Create shortcut. Does that successfully place a URL shortcut on your Desktop?

The Chrome drag and drop stuck issue can be caused by an extension, a corrupted cache, an outdated version of Chrome, or even system settings issues. Start by checking extensions, clearing cache, and updating your browser. If that doesn't fix the problem, resetting settings or creating a new Chrome profile might help. If the problem persists, a complete reinstall of Chrome might be necessary.
