Hey guys, I am new here but had a quick question. I am an online gamer who currently plays a ton of fortnite. I just recently got google fiber in Austin TX. I have great up load and download : 700-1000mps up and down. But I have bad ping in game. I usually have 40-60 but see other players with 10-25ms. Is there anything I can do to reduce my ping and or fix my problem? Thanks all.

You can run tracert to the servers to see the path it takes. There really is nothing you can do about the path. The fornite servers likely are not buying internet services from ATT. This means it must go through a connection point to another ISP. Could be in a city far away. When you were getting 25ms of ping time you might have been using the same ISP as the server or it just has a better connection.

Maybe you get lucky and there is latency on the second hop of the trace since that represents the fiber to your house but I suspect it is very small

Ping does matter for shooter type games. In effect someone with better ping see updates sent from the server faster than someone with worse ping. So you can see you enemy before he see you. It is the difference between users rather than the pure rate to the server. How much difference matters is hard to say. Many games try to "fix" this by artificially delaying some of the faster users so everyone has similar rates. Not sure what fortnite does since it was designed to be more of a casual game than some of the hard core shooters.

I know players in some games used to artificially introduce delays in their connections and then quickly remove them from time to time so they game did not have time to adjust their latency and they got a slightly better rate. It is unclear why this helps but I know players got warning about doing it.

I am very bad at shooter games so I can't say. I can win fortnite and pubg just by being lucky so those I play when I am really really bored.

how old is the router in your home. a lot of the newer ones now have cache in them to help on households that game now. make sure the router firmware up to date. look at the dns settings the router is using try using google dns. if it using googles dns try using open free dns see if anything changes in speed.
