Google Groups surely is going down. I haven't been able to reply to
anything lately, and if it gets through this will be on its own
thread. Can anyone recommend an *easy* newsreader for a complete
newsreader newbie? Or maybe show me a direction, or a link, to follow?
And sorry about the non-generic reply marks.

In no particular order:

Monsters (especially already strong nasty monsters) would occasionally
go
berserk at low health and absolutely pulverize your character. This
was
avoidable if you weren't in melee, but if you were a melee character
in
range... well, I lost more than a few characters to this.

Yep, that's still in. In fact, that came in in 1.1.x, I think, or
maybe 1.0.0.

Monsters would get stronger over time as they were killed en masse, so
eventually, I'd be fighting rats/jackals/etc in the CoC who were more
dangerous than dragons.

Still in, and again, came in after 1.0.0.

And last (and perhaps worst of all), there were still several crash
bugs in
the game, and no recovery method for your save file whatsoever. Again,
I
lost quite a few promising characters to this.

I have sometimes managed to get a crash, but for me it never was a big
problem. They are quite rare, atleast for my play style. However, they
are still in, and there is no save-file recovery.

What's the story? I really enjoy playing Adom, but those issues were
enough
to make me quit playing in disgust (for some years!). I was wondering
if the
latest version (1.1.1?) has fixed/tweaked those bugs/is

You might want to try 1.0.0. It doesn't have (all of) these problems,
IIRC. There are some player-made patches available, try finding
Vladimir Panteleev's (I hope I spelled that right) site.

Fix them? They're worse than ever. The game is just one long buggy
mess. I suggest getting patches from the various hackers who have
taken over ADOM development since Thomas Biskup hasn't touched it in
ages. Have fun with the jackals!
<<<<<

It so nice to know how happy and thankful people are when they get
great games, that someone did on his freetime, for free. And how they
always remember to mention the times the original creator suddenly
comes back to his hobby, works with it (well, currently more on JADE,
but...) and has scheduled most of his holiday to it.

And those hackers haven't "taken over ADOM development". They have
only fixed various bugs, and that is far from adding new content. I
still appreciate their work, but if they would add something, I'd be
worried that they have enough experience and skill to balance it
right. I do greatly appreciate their work, I just don't think Thomas
would appreciate strangers changing his game, except maybe for fixing
its bugs.

keep away from "thunderbird r0xx0rz!!!11ONEONE!1" people.
tbird is a pathetic excuse for a newsreader and even OE
seems like a godsend compared to it.

I haven't had any real problems with Thunderbird. I don't like every
single thing about it, but it works pretty well. Whatever client you
choose, though, you'll need to have a newsgroup server to use with it.
I was recommended www.individual.net and that works quite well for a
free one... only nusiance being that you have to sign up and wait 1-2 days.

Or, cough up the money for an account on, for example, www.giganews.com. You
can get monthly access (up to 2GB/month) for as little as $7.99 (which is
less than the price of a decent sandwich these days), or unlimited access
for $24.99. I have the latter, to be able to download pictures of... er,
lighthouses, all day long. Fast and reliable, which individual.net wasn't (I
can't remember exactly what it was that didn't work, but there was some
reason for switching to giganews).

If you're into loading lots of lighthouses... or anything else...
usenetserver.com is another option. Unlimited downloads are about $15/mo.
I've had great experiences with them over the past few years.

Yeah it depends on what you're doing. This is the only newsgroup I'm
accessing, and individual.net has worked without any problems. If you
want to acess binaries and such you'll need something else, but for
non-lighthouse activites individual.net is great.

probably the fact that individual.net doesn't carry any
binary groups, so there were no, er, boats and lighthouses
for you to download :)
