We just received this as a gift.. but due to paranoia and privacy concerns, we don't intend to use this (as intended). Can this device be modded, be used in a different way, or use a different OS? I want to be able to make this thing useful, in some way or another.

The best way to make it "useful" is to donate it to a charity unopened. This is what I did when I was given an "Alexa"...

That's what I thought too initially. The only problem, is that the gift sender would be super hurt he saw we weren't using it or didn't have it(when he comes to visit). I suppose I could set it up and get it working, and then just never have it on unless he comes a knockin'. Lol!

Use your security concerns as a teaching opportunity to discuss network security and corporate "spying". Let the giver know WHY you no longer have the device. Stand up for what is "right", even if it hurts somebody's feelings.

Sometimes the truth is cold, hard, and cruel.. but the truth nonetheless. I think some tactfulness is in order for this teaching moment. His idea of showing love and caring is solely through the material world and goods.
