Got a DX4860-UB32P Gateway (yes I know lol) looking for cpu upgrade options

just like the title states looking for cpu upgrade options for this..

You can get a whole Core2-based PC for under $150 and it'll be 100X faster than any upgrade you might be able to find for a 486DX motherboard, including the Pentium Overdrive CPUs which I believe existed at the time to do exactly that on compatible motherboards.

Nvm then, DX486 made me think it was a ~20 years old 486DX machine.

Depending on whether Gateway put BIOS restrictions/limitations in there, you may be able to put an i5-2500/2550 or i7-2600 in there.

haha naw its cool and thanks that's what I was thinking I could do, it being a 2011-2012 .. my other question would it be worth doing that as a i7 2600 runs 150ish on ebay?

I couldn't find information directly from Gateway but third-party sources say that the motherboard can use Ivy Bridge generation CPUs as well. In that case, the i5-3570 or i7-3770 may be worth considering.

Going from i3 to i7 gets you roughly twice as much processing power, which should be fairly noticeable if you run reasonably well threaded processing-intensive stuff.

I'm def gonna look to see if it can do a ivy, I think for sure it can do sandy i7, ebay has a few of the same desktops rocking them.. or would it be better just to build a newer pc? ive built them before for clients, I try to stay away from amd but might consider it to save money if I can get a lot of performance out of it.. I already have a ssd, 6gb of ram, 5670 sapphire 1gb gddr5 in this current system

If you aren't in a hurry to upgrade, you could wait for Kaby Lake and Zen. If Zen fails to put some pricing pressure on Intel, at least you'll have much improved options to consider on AMD's side. At the moment, AMD's CPUs are pretty much out of the performance game.

alrighty gotcha, ya I think ill wait for the time being 6 more months aint gonna hurt me, my l702x dell that has a i7 2630qm should hold me over for a bit if I'm needing the extra cpu power for certain things.. thanks for the info!
