Got a free HP Prodesk 400 G3.

has a the OEM HP mb that supports DDR4 2133

has 16GB ddr4 that clocks 2666 but runs 2133 to mb limitation or cpu limitation
500GB sata 3 hdd
I5-6500 cpu

the MB can fit into a full tower case as it has a back plate for the mb (already removed and checked)
only has 2 sata ports but contains PCIE x1 and PCIE x3 so a sata expansion card is an option for dvd drive.

any thoughts on what this could do for a gaming rig?

currently i run a Phenom ii 1090T @ 3.6ghz
RX 590 Gigabyte 8GB windforce
16GB ddr3 1600mhz
M4A79T delux asus MB
samsung evo 850 500gb ssd
2tb seagate hdd for storage.

i know i would be losing 2 cores and i know hte 6500 has no hyper thread support. just seeing if i could see any benefits aside from newer cpu and faster ram also sata 3 ports vs sata 2 ports on current mb.

Solution
So you will drop down to 8gb of ram.
The prodesk usually takes a 24pin motherboard power connector so you shouldn't need to get an adapter which is good.

Enjoy your upgrade!
The 6500 is quicker all around. If you managed to OC the 1090 to 4ghz, you'd almost keep up using 8 cores to it's 4. in an app that only uses 4 cores, the 6500 wins easily.
Unfortunately the best luck i have gotten was 3.6Ghz. I have stepped up the voltage some to try and help to get past 3.7 but had no success.

I gather you have 4 sticks of ram in yours like i have in mine?

sadly the HP mother board is only 2 ram slots.

the M4A79T delux im using now is rated for max 16GB ram but i think that is because there was only 4GB ddr3 at the time it came out. or its a limitation to the chip set. I havent tested 8GB sticks but i dont see it worth trying as the 1090T is 10 years old now mean while the I5-6500 is only 5 years old

The only down part is there is 2 sata ports.

But the computer store memory express has pcie x1 slot sata expansion cards that offer additional sata iii ports for $50 so i might pick one of those up so i can still use my dvd drive.

I loaded and activated windows 10 home thanks to the media creation tool using my desktop. Im gonna put it into a full case and retire a old gigabyte board with a phenom ii 955be with 8gb ddr2 ram. It has a1tb hdd and 500gb hdd in there i can reuse. Bith drives are rated for sata iii so i can get full performance out of it.
