Howdy, I just upgraded my PC, I'm currently running an Intel i7 6700k on a gigabyte z170 (I think I can't remember right now) gaming 5 mobo with 16gb 3200mhz ram and the 1070.

I didn't upgrade my psu so I am reusing about a 4 year old corsair hx850.

So the problem is whenever I load a game like path of Exile or rocket league ("taxing") my computer will just crash and reboot. No blue screen just a crash. Nothing seems to be overheating in my hwmonitor. But I can play a game like league of legends just fine. In fact I was able to crank ultra on Witcher 3 with hair works and it didn't crash it seems to just be with the games I like to play haha

Reading online people are saying it can have to do with the psu, this would make sense as my old card was a 660 and only need the 6pin pci power and this card uses a 6+8 but I don't understand all that voltage stuff, as far as the bios it's reading the 12v to be 12.05xx V which seems pretty regular

Would you suggest that it's the psu or the GPU?

If the driver isn't the problem, then the PSU could be on it's way out. You stated that it's 4 years old, which is pretty damn long for a PSU.

Make sure you are using the correct AMPS for the power supply. (It will show the AMPS on the cable to the power supply.)

Also, this could sound weird but BIOS could be causing this problem.

Also, try running these programs:

Memtest86
Prime95
You should uninstall the Nvidia display driver from your programs (not sure which version of Windows you are using). I recommend rebooting into safe mode next without networking and run Driver Sweeper ( http://www.guru3d.com/content-page/guru3d-driver-sweeper.html ) to remove any residual Nvidia display driver and registry entries. Then as a precaution when you re-install your drivers select the Custom install and check the Clean Install option.

I just upgraded from a GTX770 to the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X 8G and went through these steps with absolutely no problem and I have an i7 3770k OC'd to 4.2 Ghz and a Corsair HX650 psu.

I just attempted all the steps you had there and the problem still persists I'm on Windows 10 could I perhaps need to do a fresh install of Windows again? Shoukd I call for an rma?

Solution

I just picked up a new psu to test. I'll try that and I'll let you guys know what happens.

UPDATE:

So the new PSU seems to be working fine with everything. It appears that the old PSU has given up.

Thanks for all your help guys!
