my new pc spec is this:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 960T (2.9GHz)
Processor Core: Quad-Core
Memory: 8GB DDR3 (PC3-10600)
Max Memory: 16GB
Memory Slots: 4 (2 available)
Graphics: ATI Radeon 4200 (2943MB shared)
Hard Drive: 1.5TB SATA (5400rpm)
Optical Drive: SuperMulti DVDąRW
Audio Chipset: Integrated ALC888S-VD
Sound: 8-Channel
Network: 10/100Mbps BaseT
Wireless: 802.11b/g/n

the PC is an HP pavilion p7.
i run a 28" monitor with 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA)

I'm wondering if the Radeon HD 5770 will be a worthwhile upgrade, or if it would be overkill? I'm so far removed from computers that I've lost touch with what runs with what. I want to be able to play Skyrim when it comes out. even with the current integrated GPU it runs oblivion, not very well but still runs it. I also have a spare 650w power supply from my last computer, I know that would need to be upgraded. thanks for any help, and patience with a newb question. i got the graphics card from the October article of best cars for the money, but I'm open to suggestions. i would like to spend under $150.

That would be a HUGE upgrade from integrated HD4200 to HD5770.
What is exactly your PSU? brand? model?
HD5770 is become weak at 1920 x 1200 for today's standard. but still, it's FAR stronger than your current onboard graphic. :)

It should be good for the mean time. You might consider to save extra money for future graphic card purchase purpose, AMD Radeon HD7xxx soon to roll out and you will be able to get 6xxx series with cheaper price or you might consider go for the 7xxx series if the price is good. 650 w PSU should be able to handle most type of graphic card such as 1 piece of 6970.

the PSU is made by Echo Star? its actually 600w, my bad on that. looks pretty janky and generic. worked fine on my old computer, but I bet PSUs have come a long way in the last four years. I'll start looking at one of those. is the 600w range sufficient if i end up with a new one, or should i upgrade that now too and suck it up. I'd be cool with under $300 for both GPU and PSU
