Got a Serial Problem

Pleeeessseeee help me. I am not a newbie to hardware setup but new to installing a SATA drive.

I cannot get my BIOS or Win Vista or WIn XP to see the SATA drive.
I have a ASUS K8V-X mobo and Western Digital WD800JD SATA drive.

I've done the F6 option when installing WinXP using the floppy disc i made using the mobo cd, with a tool called MakeDisc.exe. Win Vista does not have a F6 option but it takes you to the same thing, where you have to insert a floppy with the drivers on it.

Both cases it says insert correct driver files, but i am using what i got from the mobo.

i am totally confused. The fact that the bios does not pick up teh SATA worries me.

Firstly, make sure you have pushed all the hard drive connectors in properly, including the power one. If that doesnt sort it look through your motherboard manual in the bois chapter and check whether you have to enable sata or similar, and if you have 2 sata controllers on your mobo try hooking the drive up to the other one's sockets.

If you have the K8V-XE then you should make sure your sata drive is in one of sata1 through to sata4, not sataraid1.

As a note, you should not need the floppy unless you are setting up a raid.

In some Bios's you need to disable RAID in order to be able to use SATA.

Made shure the power cables are connected, hooked it up to another SATA socket. I have enabled the sata detection in the bios, and there are no RAID disable functionality whatsoever. Nothing that indicates to RAID at all. I am not shure how to check for SATARAID1 or sata1 difference on the board or bios.

Sounds like you might have a bad hard drive. Try hooking it up to another computer and running manufacturer's diagnostics on it if possible.
Does the drive spin with power attached?
Do you hear any noise from the drive?

I think you are getting close to the truth here myself. I did not sound like it was spinning or i could not hear it. I am putting it into a friend of mine's external SATA casing so will know shortly.

Oh, sorry, didn't come up when I searched for it for some reason. I've hust downloaded the manual, and it doesn't matter which port you plug it into. The only thing I can find is make sure you have the option OnChip SATA BOOTROM set to enabled in your Advanced menu of your BIOS. Other than that I would check the drive with your friends enclosure, as you are planning to.

at any time during the installation process did you connect more than one cable from the power supply to the drive? Connecting the sata power cable and the legacy power cable can toast the drive.

luckely i know a little better, lol so no i did not.

i think the drive either is broken or my mobo cannot read a SATA2 drive unless i put jumpers on it to make it 150mbs.
