GOt a virus!!!!

Okay, so just this night I got a virus, from downloading a program and installing it. I scanned it with AVG Free 8.5 and nothing came up.
RIght after I installed it, everything froze, WTF??!!??!?!
Normally my computer isn't prown to do that kind of behavoiur. It is no faulty part, its the program. And soon afterwards my computer shut down.
I restarted my computer around 6 times, and eveytime it would freeze in about 2 seconds of logging on, and shut down.
I dont know what I am to do.
I can't un-install the program, or anything. Am I forced to take it into a shop and have them swipe it? Are they able to recover data? Please help me

Specs: Corsair 650W, Intel Core 2 Duo OC 3.6GHz, 2gb ddr2 800mhz corsair memory, 500gb Hitachi Sata II 7200rpm, XFX 9800gtx+ 512mb, Asus 650i motherboard, LG 22x Opical Drive,
I can play Crysis on Very High w/ 4x AI, so I believe my computer can run well.
Please any help is apreciated

Id get nod32 trial from www.eset.com, if you cant get this to run while you are logged in normally, you will have to start you computer in safe mode, (press f8 before you get the windows logo when booting) and try and find this program you installed and remove it. There are a few scanners on the market and i cannot fault Nod32, AVG is ok a free scanners go.
