Looking to get a `3th gen cpu soon. The 2 I have in mind is the 13600k and the 13700k. The 13 600looks impressive but it is a i5.

Now to the questions? Looking at ddr5 ram (5600 or higher). Trimmings differ a bit from what I have looked at. The lower in the mid 36 to the higher 40ish. So do timing mater anymore?

Motherboard selection? From what I have read if I get a 13th gen cpu and use a z690 mb chances are I will have to update the bios for the cpu to work. With the z790 the 13th gen works out of the box. Also brand, I have been using gigabye for the last few build, but have had some issue mainly with the drivers .

So what do I really need to look for in a new mb these days
Thanks.

Timings don't matter unless you're looking at the same speed. Timings are howany clock cycles it takes to do that operation, and while higher speed RAM tends to have lower latency, it's not by much compared to the slowest speed available

Regarding motherboards, some may allow UEFI updates without a CPU, but it depends on the board.
