Hello All,
I recently (almost) completed my new build. I say ‘almost’ because I have yet to get my hands on a GTX 1080. Seriously looking at Gigabyte N1080XTREME W-8GD (AIO water cooled). Was happy with all my other selected components so I purchased a GTX 960 just so I could ‘complete’ the build.

My question and request for feedback: Since it looks like the supply of 1080’s will take some more time to catch up with demand I was thinking of getting another 960 for SLI. Also, rumors of the GTX 1080ti are all over the place for Q4 release. Would you wait for the 1080ti? Would you add another 960 in the meantime?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Why, WHY do you use 1200W power supply for a single GPU build??? And also, PM830 is an mSATA SSD. I don't think there is an mSATA port on motherboards nowadays. Anyways, it's worth waiting for a GTX 1080 Ti. But the problem is, we don't know the price of GTX 1080 Ti yet. I'll pass on it if it's priced at more than $1000.

Greetings!

I would say that if you are planning on spending the money in 4-5 months on a 1080ti, then don't bother wasting more money now. Unless the single 960 is driving you so crazy that you just can't wait, I would recommend being patient for a little longer so that you can get what you want.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your response. I got the 1200 w Corsair because... this is my first build and I am a little 'overkill'. I wanted to insure I had enough juice in case I went crazy and tried to SLI 1080s.

Yes, the PM830's came out of my Alienware M18xR2 (I had three of them in RAID 0) Wanted to try them in my new build. And they are working just fine in fact. I also pulled an Hitachi 200GB HDD out of another old laptop just for fun.

I think good advice about waiting for the 1080ti. (Give me some time to save up).
Thanks again for your feedback.
Cheers

Yes, I do believe I can wait (and try to save up too Hahah).

I am happy with my 960, but as this is my first build and I am really enjoying tweaking it, I just want an excuse to add more stuff. The 960's are affordably tantalizing and I have never tried SLI before and want to get the experience. My Alienware M18xR2 had SLI, but honestly back in 2012 when I bought it, I did not even know what that meant. Just figured two cards better than one...

Hey, thanks for your feedback. I am going to wait on the ti, but I will most likely not be able to resist in the meantime getting another 960 so I can play Civ V and XCOM 2 mo' bettah.... (grin)
Thanks again.

From what I have read, yes 960 SLI gives good boost. Not sure if the games I play (Civ V, XCOM, Gal Civ, Falcon AF) will utilize SLI, but Hey! Fun to experiment. Probably won't even try to sell my 960 or 960's... I may build a lower end computer for a friend who doesn't have a decent computer and give it as a Christmas present.

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it.

Yeah, if you can afford to play around with the 960s now and still get what you want later, then have at it! I would totally do the same! Also, gotta commend you on looking to better someone else's experience instead of reclaiming your cost when you upgrade...nice way to be:)

Well to quote Carey Holzman (You Tuber instructional PC Build vids, in case you’re not familiar):
“Once you build your first PC, you want to right away build another, and another, and…”

So, not entirely selfless, just enjoy sharing my passion about computers with my friends. My first PC was a 386sx 20. And first computer game was Civilization (circa 1990… the very first one!). Hooked ever since.
Thanks for your kind words.

That's a good point, but the end game (no pun) is now to get the 1080ti, or whatever they end up calling it. The reason to just get another 960 is to play around with SLI and discover for myself if it is worth it, or just for the experience.
Your point is well-taken though.
Appreciate it.

Computers really are like the coolest legos ever!! Ah, the good ol' 386...I always remember feeling awesome for just having that turbo button...power at my fingertips!...

Entirely selfless or not, you are still not being selfish with your passion and that is huge in today's world. Keep building and spreading the joy of tech!

Hahaha! Yeah, that Turbo Button! I never saw that it did anything for me at all. I'd wager that it wasn't connected to anything.
