Gothic 2 question

Since so many people praised Gothic 2, I decided to play through it
despite my reservations. I still dislike the format and think that
the game balance could have used some major tweaking (combat is too
hard at the start and way too easy later on), I see what other people
like about it. It will never be one of my favorites, but it isn't too
bad.

The problem is that I'm about done with chapter 5 but I'm afraid that
a bug is preventing me from finishing the game. I'm supposed to
secure a ship, a captain, and at least 5 crewmembers. I've got 8 or 9
crewmembers including Jorgen as captain, I've got the chart from the
Monastery, but I can't get permission to use the ship. I've talked to
everyone I can think of (Lord Hagen, various paladins, the captain of
the militia, the governor and judge, the ship guards) and nobody has
anyone dialogue options.

I've been stuck there for two days so I went to a walkthrough for a
tip and it said something about Girion appearing at the harbor once
you have a captain. Girion is still still standing outside the
paladin house in the upper quarter, and I have no dialogue options
besides "END" with him. (I've already trained to 100 in two-handed
combat). Is this a bug? What I've read indicates he should be at the
harbor now.

I don't know who else to talk to about the ship...

Have you finished all your quests? Talked to Xardas one last time yet?

The lighthouse owner? He's somewhere near the harbor. There are
three people who can be captain, and he's another one of them. That
might get things going again.

So what happens if you try to walk past the ship guards? Have you talked
to Jorgen (at the harbour) to say something like 'saddle up and leave'?

>I don't know who else to talk to about the ship...

It's been a long time, but IST vaguely R that you just amble up the
gangplank onto the ship and tell anyone who gets in your way to 'beat it
or else'?? I definitely recall there being some minor opposition to
shout down .. permission? We don't need no stinking permission. 8>.

Of course, it may have varied depending on what character you are
playing as .. perhaps I'm remembering the Paladin ending or something.

I can talk my way past the guards and on to the ship, but only to
explore it. I don't have any dialogue options with Jorgen; when I
talk to him he says that I need to get a ship and the dialogue ends.

Weird. I may have to resort to killing the guards.

The walkthroughs indicate that one of the paladins should have
appeared at the harbor, but that doesn't appear to have happened.
Weird.

Even though I placed a ;-) - I mean it. Kill the guards, board the ship,
and off you go. No joke.

If you're a Fire-mage, they daren't resist you, and let you have the ship.
Otherwise, time for a bit of a rumble. 🙂

Okay, further and more specific hints:

-Try to visit Xardas but he has vanished.
-Talk to Lester and get the message from Xardas.
-Go to the Monastery and talk to Pyrokar then go enter the room guarded by
Talamon (sp?).
-Open the book about Irdorath (now possible after reading Xardas' message
above). You get a key.
-use the lamp at the end of the room to open the secret passage. Use the
key you just got to open the door.
-kill the demons guarding the secret library and take the Tear of Innos,
the sea chart and read the almanac. Must do all these.
-you should look at the sea chart and then you get a quest to gather a
crew.
-there are a few optional quests available now for each profession.
-once you have gathered sufficient crew and a captain, you can talk to the
captain to get the key to your room on the ship. Go into the room to end
chapter 5 and begin the voyage.

I remember some conflict with the guards. I don't know how it goes
if you don't play a firemage, but it may be that Girion only
appears after you have dealt with the guards one way or the other.
IIRC, I all but captured the ship, then Girion appeared and gave
me his disapproving speech or something like that.

I've done all this except the last. When I talk to the captain he
tells me that I need to find a ship. Given that he is sitting right
next to a ship, this seems odd.

I got it. I had to stare down the ship guard and get him to let me on
board. Once I did that, Girion instantly appears on the dock and I
could talk him into giving me the ship.
