Yes, the GPS in FS2002 did not approximate a real IFR-certified, panel
mounted GPS. It was more like a "glorified moving map" with some
basic GPS functions.
The GPS in FS2004 comes a bit closer to a real IFR-certified GPS, but
it still falls short. For example, when going to the flight plan page,
then scrolling to waypoint farther in the flight plan and choosing
DIRECT TO, the FS2004 GPS clears out the entire flight plan and only
allows you to fly direct to that waypoint! Hey, where did all those
other waypoints go???
In real life, you can choose any waypoint in your flight plan and fly
direct to it. Upon reaching it, the GPS automatically sequences to the
next waypoint in the flight plan.
If you want a GPS that comes *very, very close* to the real thing,
consider purchasing the Flight1 A36 Bonanza or the Piper Meridian.
Both come with Reality XP's Garmin GNS430/530 gauge, which is actually
a front-end for Garmin's real GNS430/530 PC-based simulator (the
simulator is included and runs in the background). Now you are
talking about simulating a real IFR-certified, panel mounted GPS!!
Or, if you desire to add the Reality XP GPS to an aircraft of your
choosing rather than those mentioned above, buy the GPS gauge itself,

I cannot really advise you in using the default FS2004 GPS as I
abandoned that a long time ago in favor of thie Reality XP GPS. When
using the RealXP GPS, one would hit the PROC button on the GPS, which
then brings you to a menu of available approaches for the airport you
have set as your final waypoint in the flight plan. You then scroll to
the approach you want, hit ENTER on the GPS, then a list of IAFs
appear, along with the Vector to Final option (this option is discussed
in another thread).
Scroll to the IAF you desire and hit ENTER. One final question
appears asking whether you want to activate the approach now or load
into the flight plan. If you choose Activate Now, the IAF becomes the
next waypoint and you will be given GPS guidance to that waypoint. If
you choose Load into Flightplan, the approach is loaded into the flight
plan, but you remain direct to your present waypoint, whatever that was
before you selected the approach.
If you only loaded the approach, at some point you will need to
activate the approach by either hitting PROC button and choosing the
activate approach option, or simply scrolling to the first waypoint of
the approach in your flight plan and hitting the DIRECT TO button.
