Hi there,

I inserted a cable into my old power supply (replaced now) while the computer was on (I know), which sent a surge through the motherboard, which destroyed the motherboard and the CPU. The GPU still works and displays stuff but the fan speed is stuck on 100% now which is highly annoying.

I can't find any solution to fix it but have seen multiple threads about this issue over the years.

I am currently using a new mobo and new cpu which the same gpu. I have not fresh installed so some old drivers may be on the system still. Not sure if that should affect though.

Any thoughts?

Solution
Sounds like the GPU didn't fully survive the surge either. Live with it or send it in for repair is about all I can think of. Sorry.
Try to install old firmware (drivers) onto it and install new firmware again. There is a high chance you created ESD (electrostatic discharge) that caused the flash on the GPU to become corrupt where the firmware is installed. Simply by installing new firmware, it may fix this issue.

You might be able to pull the plug on the current GPU fan and plug in another fan WITHOUT having to physically remove the old one, just to see if maybe you blew the fan motor. If the new does it too, then I'd say you need to replace the entire GPU, unless you can live with the fan noise.....sorry!
