I just put together my first pc and I went with the Asus p8z77 v lx motherboard( mostly for the price). It come with GPU boost. I am not really sure what kind of performance increase I would get from it, but I would like to know how to turn it on or off

Solution
That feature just overclocks the onboard (integrated) graphics. There is a software you can download from ASUS (for some models). Or you can just do it manually in the BIOS/UEFI (better approach).

On your model, there is a physical switch on the motherboard located above the 24 Pin power connector that says GPU Boost. Flick the switch and the board will do some OC'ing for you on the integrated graphics when you boot up again (flick the switch while computer is off, as recommended by ASUS).

If you use discrete video cards, this is useless to you.

As for how much you can get out of the integrated graphics, about 1500 Mhz is how much others have said is stable. Those are turbo clocks (max clocks) though. If your cooling solution is not very good or just stock, expect the graphics performance to drop as the GPU backs off turbo.

For your reference the stock clocks of the GPU in an Ivy Bridge CPU are usually 650 Mhz base and 1.15 Ghz turbo.

LucidLogix Virtu MVP featuring HyperFormance Technology is what I meant. It says on the boxthat is has this and it would increase the performance of a discrete GPU by 60%, but my HD 6870 is struggling right now. I ask this because it will be 2 months before I get the card I want so I want to get all that I can while I can on this card.

You need to switch to the onboard (integrated) GPU by enabling it in the BIOS, plugging your monitor cable into the onboard position, then install Lucid's Universal MVP driver.

As per ASUS's manual:

"To install LucidLogix® Virtu MVPTM:

Insert the support DVD in the optical drive. The ASUS Support Wizard appears if your computer has enabled the Autorun feature.
Click the Utilites tab, then click LucidLogix® Virtu MVPTM Software. Follow the succeeding onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
After you successfully installed the LucidLogix® Virtu MVPTM, the LucidLogix Virtu MVP icon appears in the notification area."

You might be able to download newer versions of the MVP driver on the internet instead of using the CD copy.
