So, I had a bad psu, so I bought this one yesterday. The pc works fine w/out the GPU. If I plug it in, it will boot, but only stay on for 5 minutes or so.

I have tested the GPU three times in other computers, it worked fine.

What could the problem be?

I would suggest doing a paper clip test with the power supply unit. I think the power supply supply is faulty. Other reasons, there may be some current leaks, something is not properly plugged (like RAM). Also check the temperature of GPU and the CPU.

Paperclip test done (PASSED), Temps seem to be fine too. Can you tell me more about current leaks? And if it was something a little loose, wouldn't I have trouble even withuut the GPU?

well, I've just opened up my gpu for the 1st time ever and found out it is a real pile of filth inside. I'll clean it up and see what happens.

ps: the gpu is second hand from a friend, I think he never cleaned it, and as he never recommended me to do it, I never did it

450 Watt or greater power supply with a minimum of 24 Amp on the +12 volt rail.****

your psu provides 37.4A for your 12 volt rail. should be ok.

I saw your note about the dust, I would think it could have caused over heating.
(assuming the supplemental power connector is properly connected and is providing proper power.

Finished cleaning it! Most of the dust was settled on the heatsink, not on the fan. I'll test it in a while

PS: even when it was dirty, the GPU worked in a nother computer. My friends psu is a Cx450M

some of the better motherboards have protection logic. they will reset the CPU if the graphic card pulls too much current directly from the motherboard graphics slot. it happens if the GPU gets hot or you forget to connect a supplemental power connector from the PSU to the GPU. if you have a modular supply make sure you connect the power cable to the correct rail of the psu. cheaper multi rail psu designs might have different specs for each connection.

cheap motherboards will just let your graphics card and motherboard slot burn and catch fire.

gpu tweak tools can push the power requirements up to the point where the motherboard logic triggers a reset of the cpu. remove overclock tweak programs.

I tried, but the pc keeps on rebooting

My psu is NOT modular, the pcie cord was connected and the gpu well seated, the temps were low, for as long as it stayed on, around 40ºC idle ( I live in a hot place).

Also, I do not have any kind of overclock.

Maybe the pcie slot could be the problem?

see if you have a memory dump in c:\windows\minidump directory
if you do, put it on a server and post a link.

if you don't have one, google "how to force a memory dump from a keyboard"
make the registry changes and force a memory dump then put it on a server.
I can take a quick look to see if there is a problem with the build. Often uninstallers don't work and people have multiple copies of overclock tools installed.

you can change the slot the GPU is in, check the cable and make sure one of the connectors has not been pushed out of the plastic holder. (or try a different lead from the PSU to the GPU)

you might also boot into bios and see if you can read the voltages. +3.3V, +5V, +12V and -12V
(most should be +/- 5% or maybe 10% to be within specs)

Hey, I'm back.

I couldn't find a minidump directory. and I'll try to perform this action you just described.

My mobo only has one pcie16 slot, and there is only one pcie cable in my psu.

I'll point out that this the second psu I bought. The fisrt one worked for more than a year before going bad. This one now is BRAND NEW and seems to be working flawlessly, I will, however, check the bios for the readings

How many pcie cables do you need? And how many do you have?

Sorry I took so long to answer.

I only need one pcie 6pin cable. My psu only has on pcie 6pin cable
