All of a sudden my computer would power on for a split second and then cut out when it was working fine before. I tried breadboarding my computer and at first it looked like a ram problem because it would stay on with just the psu and cpu plugged in but after messing around with it i got it to stay on with a ram stick inserted also. However now when i insert the graphics card it is going back to turning on for only a split second. I am using an Asus m5a97 R2.0 and there isint onboard graphics nor do i have an extra card to try it with. Could the motherboard have just fried somehow? It was running fine before it started doing this.

I had the exact same thing happening to my but with my wireless card. I had to take it out and then my computer started working again. Apparently it was my fault because it shorted out and it wasn't under warranty. I was lucky I didn't break my board.

Question: What preceded the computer no longer booting? If you're upgrading to this new graphics card, then what did you previously use to display graphics? You mentioned that there is no onboard graphics. Also, what is this graphics card, and did you plug in the external power connectors? It would help us to help you diagnose this problem if you stated your full specs, including your power supply's manufacturer and model number.

In addition to my questions, would you mind trying the following: shutting off the computer, unplug the power connector from back of the power supply, hold computer power button for 10 seconds, release the power button, plug the power connector into the power supply again, then turn on the computer. Any change? This procedure can be helpful in resetting the power supply, and resolve certain issues.

rcald2000 I am not upgrading a graphics card. This is a problem that just started happening with my existing one. I have been doing what you suggested with the power supply a few times and no dice yet. The only symptom it should preceding this was right before it started doing this when i tried to power on my computer it started up with no display. Before if this happened it was solved by messing with ram slots and resseting cmos but after it did it that time it started not staying on. It almost looks like the fans regular speed if its just the motherboard and cpu connected to the psu but when i add ram they spin slower and then with the graphics card it doesnt hold a charge.

Specs: Psu: Corsair CX600
Motherboard: Asus M5a97 R2.0
Gpu: Asus Radeon HD 7770

I have been using this setup for atleast 3 years and havent had this problem before.

I would suggest installing a new CMOS battery; I'm grasping at straws. It occurred to me when you mentioned the previous resets. I've seen some weird behavior in the past from dead CMOS batteries.

The most likely cause in my opinion is that CX600; they have a reputation for unreliability. I would either borrow one from someone or invest at least $50 into a better unit. A Seasonic S12II 520 watt is the baseline that I would consider. In addition I would submit a RMA to Corsair for the CX600. I doubt they'll give you much resistance to the request.

I managed to get a new psu and a new cmos battery but it looks like it is still doing the same thing. So it looks like it is either the gpu or the motherboard itself. Thank you for the help and quick replies!

did you make any changes to your graphics profile via afterburner or something else? did this happen after you changed the core clock speed or something? You could try unplug the gpu and hook it up to the motherboards video input. fresh install all of your gpu drivers. uninstall afterburner or any similar software and then put your gpu back in and see what happens.

I'm out of ideas, except to state the obvious: issue is either your motherboard or graphics card. I don't know how you would determine which, without trial and error.

HD 7770 came out February of 2012, which was 4 years 10 months ago. However, the traditional 3 year warranty is normally from date of purchase. If your purchase date was anywhere near that period, I would recommend reaching out to Asus support and seeing if you qualify for a warranty exchange.
