gpu clock dropping, causing fps drop

Hello, I've been having lag spikes in overwatch for the past weeks, and I think I've narrowed the problem down to my gpu clock dropping. I just started checking the gpu yesterday, and sure enough the lag spikes happened exactly when the gpu clock halved. My question is: How do I fix this? Any help is appreciated, thank you!

How much is the core clock dropping? If it is dropping significantly that could certainly cause fps drops. Usually that would be caused by overheating, the gpu will throttle its clock speeds in order to cool down if it gets to hot. What are your gpu temps? Also you should post your specs when you ask something like this.

temps, power supply, software/settings all could be the cause

full specs?

gpu temps are 50 - 60 degress celcius. Specs:

FX 6300
Zotac GTX 1060 6gb
2 x 4 gb g skill ripjaws ram
500 w evga psu
1 Tb wd blue hdd

core clock sometimes just drops to 1500 mhz, sometimes goes all the way down to 900 mhz. normally is at around 1800.

are you monitoring cpu temps?

also make sure "maximum performance" is selected in the nvidia drivers, and high performance is set under windows power options

OK, so I did some testing and found that my cpu temps while playing overwatch are 60 degrees celsius to 68. Also, when the spikes happen, my cpu usage goes up to 100%. could this maybe mean my cpu is getting too hot? I'm thinking maybe an aftermarket cpu cooler or thermal paste, how bout you?

yup thermal throttling begins at those temps for amd cpu's

so you say getting a new cpu cooler will solve my problems?

fans are spinning, and I regularly clean the dust out of my pc.
