I have a pretty old gaming rig that has an old Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3 rev 1.0 MB with an i7 2600k cpu. It has 2 EVGA GTX 570s in SLI but wanted to upgrade the GPUs to a single, more powerful GPU without downright buying a whole new PC (since everything is in need of an upgrade). What would be the most powerful GPU i could purchase for the MB and CPU to still work with? (to avoid bottlenecking as much as possible) Thank you so much for the help!

Im running a 1080ti with a 2600k @ 4.5 and it's pretty good, 10 or so fps lacking compared to latest CPUs but im happy with it.

If you go ahead with a 4GB+ GPU it would be a good idea to have 16GB ram for better game vram and system ram data transitions to minimise virtual paging on the drive.

My main concern was compatibility with the motherboard, i was wondering if a newer card might have different connections or the bandwith needed wouldnt be enough due to an old MB. I will definetly consider upgrading ram aswell since its always been in the back of my mind.

Id probably step up to a GTX 1070 if its the best i can work with, i wouldnt mind bottlenecking too much as it would be an upgrade that would let me later upgrade the rest of the PC and take full advantage of the card. My only question is will it be compatibale with my old motherboard? I just dont want to open a new box only to find out the MB isnt compatible with a new card.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be compatible. The Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3 is a retail board. The GTX 10xx cards are all UEFI/Lagacy BIOS compatible. I've had my GTX 10xx cards in an amazing array of old boards with no issues. I'm sure somewhere in the group was a Z68 board.
