GPU fan spins faster than it needs

Hello

I have a new PC, about a week old and everything has been running normally. I use it to edit video and pictures as well as gaming (namely WoW, Skyrim, Witcher..)

The GPU I have is the AMD Radeon R9 290 and I have set it's target temperature at 80 C (it's default 95 sounds a bit too hot for me, and I haven't noticed any performance differences) and the fans are spinning at 39-47% in order to keep it at that.

However yesterday and today I've noticed that the fans are spinning faster than that, about 55 to 60% (and if I game without headphones it's kind of annoying because this is one loud GPU lol) and the temps are at 67-75 C. So with no settings tuned anywhere apart from the custom target temp, the fans are suddenly acting as if the card was getting hotter than it should. If I close the game fans will go to about 20% and temps stay at 45'ish C.

I understand that as a number the 55 to 60% is a pretty normal fan speed for a GPU under load, but the noise level forces me to use headphones if I play games and I'd like for them to stay under 48% (at 48% the sound is far louder than at 47% huh)

Is there anything I might've accidentally changed to affect the fans like that?

Not necessarily. It is better to leave the auto fan adjustment setting in-tact. Use MSI Afterburner and enable automatic fan curve speed adjustment. AMD cards run hotter and they are noisy. Besides that nothing seems to be at fault.

If its a stock OEM AMD cooled R9 290 thats just it the reference cooler on them was a bust and failed, if you go look at a Sapphire R9 290 Vapour-X all you can hear is air moving but only slightly and its the second coldest R9 290 against the MSI lightning but thats a waist of money, if you were to game with the vapour x you wouldnt need headphones or even a case for that matter its so quiet, any of the custom coolers are better than reference, an R9 290X runs at the same temps as a GTX 780 Ti so noone say NVIDIA is overall cooler because thats a lie, the reference cooler on NVIDIA cards is better

You could also try setting the fan manually to 47 or 48% and see how your card's temperatures are when you're playing. If they're acceptable to you, then you could just have them run at that speed at all times if it's bearable for you. Otherwise, maybe set a profile for it or something.

Yeah maybe Ill have to set up a profile. And yeah I am using the reference card, which was a bad buy and I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket cooler for it, like the Arctic Accelero Xtreme III. but I'll wait for now since I dont want the warranty to become void just yet . 😛

I already went Intel with my CPU, and these noise and heat levels are making me want to save up for an Nvidia card as well.

changing the cooler doesn't necessarily void the warranty, as long as you mount the original back on when sending it back. Many people have reported on this forum that they've directly asked such-and-such manufacturer and was told it was OK to change the cooler as long as they knew what they were doing.

Just get the custom cooler and be happy 😀D

ah that's awesome then thanks! I guess I know what Im saving up for next then (new PC blew a huge hole into my wallet).
