Yes, it's me again, I have yet another problem. I have done a out of case build, and I shorted the power pins on my h97 pro4, and the psu fan turns on, cx600, the cpu fan turns on, i5 4460 but the gpu, gtx970 strix Asus, fan turns on, for a few seconds then turns off. My monitor has no display either. Since I am a first time builder, I have probably been absent minded, so don't be afraid to ask dumb questions, like "Have you switched it on at the mains?" As that is probably the problem. Anyway, all help would be appreciated, and this community has helped me out three times now, so thank you people, or I would have given up.

Edit: I'm not too sure if this is normal, but there are no sounds. This is probably a stupid observation as I have no speaker plugged in, but my monitor has inbuilt speakers, but the monitor is not working anyway

Edit: Ok, I forgot to turn the monitor on at the mains. Looks like everything has gone wrong

Solution
yes it is normal to have a few of them, the molex plug is the old hard drive and Cd-Rom power cord, before the SATA standard, but they are still used and a power supply should have a few. it will not matter which you choose.
The diag speaker will help.

when the system starts it performs a Power On Self Test, or POST. the POST checks to make sure certain things are there (RAM. CPU, Keyboard), then allows boot. if something is amiss, POST will tell you via the speaker.
for example with a speaker installed, removing the RAM and attempting to Boot the POST will fail and the motherboard will beep, the number and duration of the beeps tell you what is the issue.
my motherboard for example will short beep followed by 5 long beeps for no...
0. Have you confirmed the monitor is hooked up to the GPU and not the motherboard onboard video? Confirmed the monitor is switched to display the input from the GPU connection (if GPU to monitor cable is HDMI, making sure the HDMI input in the monitor is the active one)?

1. Check (pull and re-plug) the video card's power cables. Do this at both ends if it's a modular or semi-modular PSU.

2. Have you ever been able to get it too bios screen? Have you tried pulling the GPU, connecting the monitor to the motherboard video to verify it at least comes up to bios screen? This assumes the mb has onboard video.

the post speakers is not tied to the sound card. there should be a header on the motherboard near the front panel connectors called speaker, there needs to be a speaker plugged into that header to get the beep codes. the motherboard may be telling you why it is not booting but without a speaker you cannot hear it.
it doesn't have to be pretty or permanent but a speaker would make the diagnostic process go quicker. I used a speaker from my stereo and spare wire to make a diagnostic speaker.

did you plug in the 4 pin molex connector above the PCIe x1 slot. that connector provides power to the PCIe slots?

Quick confirmation here. I am using a dsub cable from monitor to mobo. Does this matter?

Having trouble finding the 4 pin molex wire in cx 600. I know this is extremely nooby, but would there be a label on the wire, and what wire is it? Oh and this is the socket labelled pcie-pw1 because I don't have anything plugged in there. Oops

Is it normal to have 4 of these? They have the same colour scheme, but they have two of each of the wires. If so, which one do I plug in, or does it not matter? I am going to go to a computer store today, to get a diagnostic speaker.

Edit: Also I have heard that you only need one stick of ram, cpu, psu etc to run. If so, should the monitor be displaying anything, as it says no display? If it is of any relevance, I am using a d-sub to d-sub cable from monitor to motherboard. Should I connect a hdmi cable?

my motherboard for example will short beep followed by 5 long beeps for no memory detected. there will be a different one for a bad CPU, and another for a bad RTC.....
you see now why a simple speaker is pretty valuable.

DB-9 to the motherboard? aren't you using a video card? if there is a video card installed then plug the monitor into the video card. the monitor should be connected to the 970.

Solution

Ok, this will be a mouthful. I have actually got it working, as I plugged a hdmi cable into the gpu and monitor. The monitor then showed everything good, with motherboard, ram, and cpu ok. However, there are some weird things to note:
My speaker is not beeping at all
I didn't plug anything into pcie_pw1, because the 4-pin molex didn't seem to fit. Do I need to press harder, as I am slightly paranoid.

However, I did plug in a 6+2 connector into the gpu. Anyway, should I celebrate and build in the case, or should I be notified of anything? Also, when I build in the case, and disassemble my setup, do I need a new thermal paste coating? It is 2 days old.

ok I just re-read the manual and the molex is needed when there are three (3) cards installed. with one card just the 6+2 is fine.
you will only need to clean and reapply thermal paste if the cooler has been removed. you should be able to leave the cooler attached.

Thank you very much for your advice, I probably would have gotten nowhere without your help(!) I Should be fine from here, but I have a feeling something will go wrong. Anyway thanks, r_1 for your help, much appreciated.

Quick query here, if I connect a wireless adaptor card into pcie, do I need the molex?
