My GPU made a popping noise followed by a flash then smoke. My PC shut off. I pulled the GPU. My computer powered back on. Is it safe to assume this is just the GPU and not the psu? It's a r9 280x oc I have a ocz 650 w bronze rated PSU. I submitted the card for RMA.

Hello. It is usually safe to assume it is simply the GPU.

Furthermore, your power supply has only a single 12V rail. Your computer would not have booted at all, and everything else would have burned, including the motherboard, if the 12V had failed.

Power supplies of that quality have over-voltage protection and over-current protection. It will simply close down if your video card fails, before anything is damaged. If your PSU would have failed, the over/under-voltage protection would have prevented it from working.

If you have a spare PCIe card, you can always confirm if your PCIE port is damaged, but I seriously doubt it.

Agreed with above poster.

I'm thinking the VRM's blew on the GPU. They probably didn't have the thermal pads applied properly or their was manufacture defects in the modules from the beginning. I'm fairly confident you have ground for a clean RMA.

I also agree with testing the slot with a (preferably cheap) GPU. Maybe your motherboard has a second slot either way in the event your primary slot is damaged.

Themaster I accidentally down voted. Everything checks out fine. This would be the second email for this card. The first time I sent it in was for the fans failing and overheating . My mobo is a m5a97 r2.0

Thanks for letting me know as that does bug me when someone down-votes someone trying to help them hahaha!

Man, is that motherboard ever popular. Shows up on this forum everyday and it was the one my buddy decided to get with his FX build.

You do only have one slot at the full 16x speed. Hopefully it isn't damaged. Like nats said, I highly doubt it is too.

You can visually inspect the slot if you want - look for any black marks
