I'm planning to buy a new rig soon a very important part of which will be a 29" ultra wide monitor. As a consequence, I'm going to be using a 2560x1080 resolution (the native one for this monitor) and I'm kinda stuck with choosing the right GPU.
Most happily I'd buy a GTX770 because it fits just right with my budget but many people I talked with me told me that it'd be a nightmare to play on such resolution with such "poor" card and I can count on 30fps tops and I shouldn't even think about this monitor without at least GTX780 and preferably GTX770 in SLI (seriously).
After diving deeper in the subject, I'm calling bullshit on most of their accusations since the benchmarks I found suggest that most demanding games (Hitman Absolution, Bioshock Infinite) now run smoothly (~55fps) on 2560x1440 on ultra with GTX770. Since my resolution will cover a 1/3 less area, the results are definitely even better there. What's more surprising, the GTX780 seems to offer a boost of at most 10%, though in the majority of tests it's more like 5%. Thus, I'm not so sure if it really is so much of a must since the difference really isn't as drastic as people seem to depict it...
And here's the question: is a card like GTX770 a good choice which would allow to play comfortably on highest detail for some time or I should really drop the quality of other parts for the sake of GTX780? In my country, GTX780 is over 1.5 times the price of GTX770 which doesn't look like so much of a deal for the given performance rise.
