Hello guys, as u can see i am getting a new gpu and currently only game that i am playing is world of warcarft.. Its planned to be paired with a i5 4970k, 8gb 1600mhz and chieftec aps-550s. After some searching 2 gpus come up:

-r9 280x which i can get for 210-220 euro gygabyte windforce version
-gtx 770 at 240-250 euro gygabyte overclocked version

The question is:
1) which card is going to work better with world of warcarft (i read that nvidia generally preform better with world of warcraft) and will i notice the difference?
2) most important - Which cards is better in general (its seems they are equal, but imo nvidia > radeon when it comes to sth more then statistic data)?
3) Is gtx 770 worth the extra money in case its better?

Am going to play on 22inch full hd.

P.S. Currently i am playing Wrath of the Lich king expansion but am not sure how long am gonna stay here and tswitch to newer expansions like cataclism or mist of pandaria or eaven worlds of dreanor.

I am hoping fast answers :) tnx in advance!

Sorry for mistakes english is not my native languge

Asus DCU2 top r9 280x - 190 euro

^^ Excellent buy for the price compared to the others, also would be my pick. The TOP variants b Asus are the best also.

Best to worst (price in mind)

R9 280X TOP>R9 290>GTX 970>GTX 770

The R9 290 is better then the GTX 770, it is faster by a reasonable amount to say at least.

Get the Asus R9 280X TOP!
The 770GTX is End-of-Life, consider getting the 970GTX if the prices are similar. The 970GTX is a great value and is quite a bit faster than the 770. Also it has twice the VRAM.

If you're set on getting either of these two cards, I think the price difference between the two is worth it for the 770. It will be a bit faster in most games and you get PhysX if your into that sort of thing and the games you play support it.

Just so you know, I'm not a nVidia fan boy, I have a 7950 (AMD), my son has the 770GTX which I advised him to get at the time. For me it's all about value and performance.

GTX 770.

The R9 280X is known to have a high failure rate. It is essentially the old HD 7970 pushed to run at a faster speed.

As to how they compare in World of Warcraft, is not a big deal as both cards can max the game.

edit: yes as techgeek said, get the 970 if dont cost a lot more.

i definitely wouldn't say the gtx770 is "end-of-life". it will still be a relevant 1080p graphics card for at least another 2-3 years on AAA titles, and much much longer on low end games. that said, ive seen a few deals of the gtx760 at $165 and the gtx770 at $230 recently. i know the msi tf3 760 is still for sale at $165, not sure about the 770. but like said, unless your getting the 770 for $250 or less, the $330 price tag for the gtx970 is simply a much better deal for a low power low heat very high performance video card. these are usd prices so your euro price mileage may vary. but with your 4790k, you really should be pairing with no less than a gtx780/970 or r9-290.

EOL means they aren't making them anymore. The supply will dry up in the channel very quickly, especially when retailers discount them to make room for the new 900's. Which also means that if there is a warranty issue, the supply of new cards will likely be gone and you'd get a repaired card rather than new. No where in there did I say that the 770GTX was a bad card, in fact I advised my oldest son to get one in January. However this is October and if he was buying now, I would advise him to get the 970.

Also "relevant" is a relative term and dictated on a game by game basis. A game such as Watch Dogs which has an affinity for massive VRAM volumes struggles at ultra settings on only 2GB of VRAM. Also it appears that Shadow of Mordor is also quite harsh on yesterdays high-mid range cards. These two recent games mark a shift in my opinion whereby developers are finally coming around to pushing our platform of choice. We are seeing a resurgence in PC graphics fidelity that I was afraid was gone forever with last gens crappy console ports.

well at my place i couldnt find gtx970 under 380 euro while r9 290 (non x) can be found for 290euro both those cards are "kinda" out of my budget, gtx 770 is around 290euro ( one that was 250 sold out), and i found assus r9 280x dcu2 top for less then 200 euro, So the prices are next

Assuc DCU2 top r9 280x - 190 euro
GTX770-290euro
r9 290- 300
gtx970- 380 euro

So as u can see r9 280x dcu2 top is 30%cheaper so its seems to me as best buy, though i havent set budget strictly i was planing to spend 250e preferably around 200 but if u thing that r9 290 and gtx is worth extra money i thing i could add another 100 euro, but take in mind that i am currently playing only wow, and i would like for my cards to server me at least 3-4 years

-If u could line those cards from best to worst, and then do the same taking in mind the price.

p.s. is r290 (not x) better then gtx 770 and how much?

Tnx in advance

read edited version with links plz above
from what i could find out its reference card (like basic version) and its much louder and hotter then other cards if i am right? i dont to have vulacano that sound like airplane in my rig :)

I don't understand why people are suggesting a GTX 970???? Even a GTX 770??? HE only plays WoW... a GTX 760 will play it at max settings for christ sake.
You don't need a 290x unless you're planning on playing other games! Save your money if this card will solely be for WoW.

AMD 280x or GTX 760

Personally I'd go for the nvidia but both are good cards

People don't play one game forever, over time they want to play other games also.

Well in that case go SLI gtx 970's which is the best bang for buck graphics solution currently available.
He want's a card to play wow, a GTX 760 will play wow...an 290x is a TERRIBLE choice! i Can't stress this enough! The GTX 970 is cheaper, uses less power and is a more powerful card.

If you're going to spend the cash on the 290, i don't know what the prices are over where you are but here you can pick up the GTX 970 for $40 extra and is a far better bang for buck card.

I'm getting confused with 290 and 290x lol. 290x is same price as GTX 970. 290 is $40 cheaper. Still I'd go the GTX 970. But if it's solely for WoW i'd go a gtx 760 or 280x

here are the prices of those cards in my country

assus r9 290 reference model- 250-280 +kraken g10+x40= 350euro
R9 290 non-reference models- 350- 390
R9 290x- 450-550e
gtx970 360-420
r9 280x 250-300

take in mind thats there is a big difference in prices going with same models so u can find r9 290x from 400 to 680 but i took prices in average.
As u can see most of this cards are over my budged i was planing getting sth for 250 euro, but in case
1)some of this card have extraordinary price and it will give me lots of extra for the money?
i can put another 100 euro or so. What i was thinking is getting refence r9 290 which i found for 240e and getting the Kraken G10 and liquid cool but
2)am not sure how much this cooling will cost me( from what i can see its anohter 100euro so total price is 340 euro)
3) is reference + Kraken G10 and liquid cool better then other nonrefence models like saphire tri3, gyga windofoce and others in terms of performance (going with oc, and wihout) noise and heat.
4)Those gtx970 at 350 e seems nice to me but am not sure about MSI and their cards?(model: MSI Geforce GTX 970 4GB GDDR5 GTX 970 GAMING 4G)

Best bang for buck card is the GTX 970. Get the GTX 970 hands down
MSI is a top brand and has been known to make quality cards. If you're looking to overclock a GTX 970, definitely go for a non reference....not because they come with better cooling (this should be considered anyway), but they have a 6pin and 8pin connection rather then 2x6pin which will provide a stronger, more reliable overclock.

From the reviews I read when looking around for cards, the cream of the bunch was the gigabyte GTX 970 G1 gaming. I ended up going for the Galax GTX 970 EOC as i went sli (bought 2) and they came at a $60 cheaper price tag each ($120 difference) and have a backplate included (some of the other brands have backplates too). Being a newly formed brand and one of the underdogs, there weren't many reviews of the galax card but from what I found and from my own personal experience now, these cards are a great buy.

Whether you go for gigabyte, msi, asus or galax....each card is an absolute gem with there own advantages and perks and you will be happy with either one you choose.
