Question GPU gets disabled in Device Manager when gaming ?

Hello there. I am new here and have a super annoying and serious issue.

During gaming, my GPU (Radeon RX 6900 XT bought in October 2022) randomly gets disabled, resulting in black screen, so a hard reboot is needed. Then when I re-enter Windows, there is a slightly flickering black bar at the top of the screen. I then have to open Device Manager, Enable Device, Disable Device and then Enable Device again in order to get rid of the black bar and get things working normally. The issue then reoccurs when gaming, and the cycle continues. It happens in various games such as World of Warcraft and Heroes 3, some times after a short time, other times after many hours. A lot more in WoW than in Heroes though. At one point I even went a week without the issue occuring. No obvious pattern at all.
Please note that my other hardware is relatively new and decent with the exception of my Corsair AX 760 PSU which is from 2014.

What I have done so far:
  • Formatted C drive and reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch
  • Updated GPU driver through Adrenaline
  • Tried a different PCI slot (GPU)
  • Updated BIOS
Any tips or help is tremendously appreciated. Thank you!

Specs:
Motherboard: MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX
GPU: ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6900 XT
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury RGB 16 GB
PSU: Corsair AX 760
Storage: Samsung SSD 840 PROSeries 256 GB
OS: Windows 10 Home

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

You might want to try and power the system with a reliably built 850W unit borrowed from a friend or neighbor and see if the issue persists.

Thanks. I don't have anyone from whom I can borrow a PSU. However, I will soon be borrowing a friend's GPU to test. But maybe it is time for a new PSU no matter what. Is my PSU known to be unrealiably built?

It's an old unit, that's what's causing me to state that's it's the part of your problem. The unit's been in your rig for a decade, a PSU when aged will not output the same amount of power as it did when brand new. You also didn't mention the rest of the specs so we're flying half blind into your issue. A PSU will be powering the entire the build, not just the GPU.

I have now added my specs hoping that your flying involves less blindness. Thanks, Titan.

Thank you!

Got a link to the particular model for your current GPU? What did you have prior to the RX6900XT?
Yes, of course. This is the one:

My previous card was a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

hey there!

im having the same issue (EXACT SAME ISSUE) with my RX580 4gb, and even tried the same “solutions” xD, but it kept occurring as you said, my PSU is relatively new, but even so, it is happening, so I’m pretty sure it’s a driver thing problem, if you guys have any solutions, that would be really helpful and appreciated!

build:
GPU: AMD RX 580 4g Sapphire Nitro +
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
PSU: 550W Cooler Master
OS: Windows 11
MotherBoard: Asus B450
Memory: 16Gb 3000Mhz

Thank you.
