I have an ASUS STRIX-GTX-980 card, and I've had it for a year. It caused some monitor issues recently, so we gave it to the ASUS people, who repaired and returned it. During this time, I was using a GTX 650 that was installed.

Now, when my 980 was put back into my computer, it isn't being detected by the computer. Nothing is in Device Manager and dxdiag and it shows it's using the Intel HD 4600 card instead. It won't let me install any Nvidia drivers either as the card is "incompatible".

My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97X-SOC F3.

You mean the motherboard, not the CPU.
Still, there's no point plugging the monitor into the motherboard, you want it to work on your...

So you mean it is connected to a VGA port on your motherboard's back I/O. Well you can't fully use your GTX 980 if the monitor is not connected to your graphic card's display ports. If you need to use a VGA connection, then you need a DVI to VGA adapter. Unfortunately, I believe you do not get a DVI to VGA adapter as part of your graphics card accessories.

The pcie power slots on the GTX 980. You find the 6+2 pin pcie cables from your power supply. If your power supply do not have enough, then your power supply is not good enough to use with the GTX 980.:

You should have a guide from your graphic card that give you some basic information in the installation of your GTX 980. Your motherboard manual should provide a bit more.

You need to make sure that you're VGA cable is actually physically plugged into your graphics card and not your onbroad graphics otherwise your pc will only use your onboard graphics which would explain the Intel HD graphics been detected. If you arent too sure where i mean take the side panel off your case and follow your graphics card along to the end and put it into the display port on the end.

This. The 980 doesn't have a VGA output. You will have to use a DVI adapter or use a different cable, HDMI or Displayport if the monitor supports it.

I used an HDMI cable but it simply says "No HDMI cable" The display will go into power save mode in 5 minutes." Both fans spin and a red light glows when it's on. Another thing is it was working fine until it was sent to be repaired, now it's bring a host of issues.

Red light where? Red light at the pcie power slots. If so that means, you haven't plugged in all the pcie power cables that GTX 980 needs correctly. The leds on the gTX 980 Strix need to be white on the pcie power slots.

Are you sure? I don't think it is a LED there.
For your display issue, have you tried reinserting the graphic card again?
Do you have two white LED on your GTX 980 when power is connected?

No point using the VGA port on the motherboard. That just simply means you using the cpu's integrated graphics and not the GTX 980. Thus you can't install the graphic card driver for the GTX 980 since it is not detected.

Try unplugging the card and reinserting it again from the pcie slot.

You can also try to use a DVI to VGA adapter.

Alright, I'm going out to buy the DVI adapter, what are the driver related things I need to do? I had a 650 in it before this, should I uninstall all Nvidia drivers first and then install the 980 drivers?

Yes ideally, you should uninstall any old graphic card driver you had before. Install the GTX 980 and then install your the gpu drivers.

Some ASUS service guys came over and they said the GPU had malfunctioning power connectors and replaced the card, then they hooked up their monitor to my CPU with an HDMI cable and it worked. They told me to do the driver stuff and left. I connected my monitor to the GPU via an HDMI cable and it didn't work. (No one has a DVI to VGA adapter, so I'm in a bit of a situation at the moment.) I went out and got another HDMI cable, and that didn't work as well. When I connect the HDMI cable to my motherboard though, it works. I'm really confused right now...

My monitor is a 21.5 inch Dell S2240L.

What monitor you have shouldn't matter.
If the person who helped you before comes back ask him/her to stay and make sure it work with the graphic card before leaving and ask him/her to install the drivers to make sure it works.
The problem is that the motherboard is not detecting the graphic card as your primary display output.

Solution
Sorry, I meant GPU. They connected the HDMI from my GPU to their monitor, and it worked. Mine doesn't do the same thing though :/. I'll call them again, but they tend to take a while. Is there anything I can do to make the motherboard recognize my graphics card as the primary display output?

If it does that then it may be possible the HDMI port on your monitor is faulty.

Tried it with another monitor, still didn't work. When we took it to the repair place two days ago, the connection from the GPU to the monitor worked. Don't know why it's not working at home.
