I just got my newly ordered motherboard, gpu and cpu. They are: MSI Z97 GAMING 5 motherboard, MSI geforce GTX 980 4gb GPU and the intel i7 4770k CPU. I've installed everything into my computer correctly, and installed the new motherboard drivers. I've plugged my DVI cable that goes into my monitor into the graphics card. However, I can't open nvidia control panel, nor does the graphics card get detected in dxdiag, or in the windows device list. Any ideas?

Just tried it but it says that the installation failed. My brain is very confused at the moment.

I guess it wont install because it can't detect the GPU?

Update:
The monitor device name in dxdiag is: Microsoft Basic Display Driver.

You might want to re-seat your graphics card and check if there are any objects in the PCIE slot.

Or even try it in another full length slot.

To get Windows to show hidden and driverless devices in device manager:

1. Press the Windows key + X
2. Select Command Prompt (Admin)
3. Type "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" and hit enter
4. Type "Start DEVMGMT.MSC" and hit enter.
5. Once in Device Manager hit the View menu and select show hidden devices.

edit: also check that the GPU is powered up with LEDs and fans all working. If they are not, it might be a power issue. Ensure the PCIE power connectors are attached.

Okay, so I re-seated the GPU into a different PCIE slot. It is now showing up in dxdiag. Reinstalling the drivers atm to see if it works correctly! Cheers for the help :)

You will still want the card to be running in the first slot, because according to MSI's product page, the second and third full length slots operate at X8 and X4 respectively. The first two slots might be shared lanes and might allow X16 on either slot if only one is used, but that is not specified.

If the first slot turns out to be faulty you will want to RMA because you need the first two slots working for proper SLI/Crossfire (which is a major feature of your board)

If you have other PCIE devices (even short X4 or X1 cards) you could use them to test the first slot.

Okay, I'll try to put the card back in the first PCIE now to see if it works.

UPDATE:

Moved the GPU over to the first PCIE slot, and I'm back to how it was. GPU is not showing up anywhere and nvidia drivers are not loading.

UPDATE 2:

Oh nevermind. My screen turned black for a little bit and turned back on again. Now the GPU is detected and the drivers are running. This is making no sense, but I guess it's working now? Gotto do some tests to see.

Okay, so the GPU is now working, but there are a few problems still. Geforce Experience does not detect it apparently in the "Game" tab. It's there in the other tabs thought. And the other problem is that I can't get dual monitors to work. I use one displayport cable and a dvi for the other monitor (it does not have a displayport input).

Oh nvm. Dual monitoring is now working. Everything seems to working fine now actually! However. I may be mistaken by this but I thought DisplayPort cables supports 144hz? Cause I'm not getting any 144hz option in the nvidia controlpanel dropdown menu where it was located when I connected my monitor through dvi-dual link cable.
