GPU MEMORY stacking

Right first time poster . and i would love some information on this subject . I did read the post on gpu memory myths . What has been puzzling me last few months is that Windows experience index is showing when crossfire off 3072mb and crossfire on 6144mb across 2 x 7970 3gb . Also games like Middle earth Shadow of Modor is letting me use 6144mb of available graphics memory If it don't stack or double then what is it doing and its letting me play in Ultra graphics settings which takes up 6144MB . My GPU memory is Hynix if that's any help . GPUS are HDR7970 3 GB 1ghz x 2 3072mb. Another point i like to add first time i noticed this was happening was on the game Max payne 3 when i turned up all the filters that read 4091MB of 6144MB . This is driving me nuts . I know i have only effective 3GB on a single card . Thanks in advance for anyone else who is experirencing this ?

That is completely false. SLI / Crossfire configurations never stack GPU memory. They also run at their lowest clock speeds.

Weird. Maybe new AMD drivers allow that. I doubt it.

I have no idea. Maybe it appears as 6GB dedicated vram but it's only allowed to use 3GB, otherwise it coould be referring to combined with RAM or something.
