I recently threw together a bunch of old parts to get started PC building. Everything is running smoothly but my graphics card is not working. Here are my specs (some old stuff..) :

[strike]PCCHIPS A13G+ MOBO[/strike] .................................ASUS Z270-A Prime
[strike]AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.2 GHz[/strike] ..... Intel Kaby Lake i5-7600k
XFX radeon R7 250 2gb
[strike]corsair 2x2gb 800 MHz ddr2[/strike] ......................... Corsair 2x8gb DDR4 3000MHz
[strike]windows 7 pro 64bit[/strike] ................................ Windows 10 Home

-The card is not showing up in device manager.
-AMD's driver update program tells me that no AMD device is found.
-The graphics cards fans are spinning and it worked in the pc I pulled it from.
-Yes it is properly installed in the PCIe slot.
-Set in BIOS to use not use onboard graphics if GPU is installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ah, no. That wasn't clear.

Given the age of the system (mobo in particular), there may not be BIOS support for newer GPUs...... and it's Gen1 PCIe.....
Implementation in that era didn't always provide the full specification 75W through the PCIe (I think a lot provided <50W).

That could be the issue. The GPU is 65W, but needed via the PCIe slot, with no external power IIRC.

Between the PCIe power and potential lack of BIOS support, it's likely going to be extremely tough to get it functioning at all.

After further research I believe you are correct. I found mixed results but the power output for PCIe 1.0 seems to be around 50W or 60W. Although some sources said it was 75W. I can't find a reputable source for that but I assume that is the problem. It's getting enough power to run its fan but I guess that's it. Time for a new mobo/cpu. Thanks!

It's more implementation than actually specification of the PCIe Generation.

Don't quote me on these numbers definitively, as I can't find a source - but I believe PCIe Gen1's official spec was 75W, Gen2 was something like 130or140W, and Gen3 can theoretically power something in the 225-300W range through the slot itself.

Just because the official spec allows for it though, doesn't actually mean that's whats implemented by board manufacturers.

Gen3 and Gen2 are standardized at 75W......and always have been IIRC.
Gen1 was interesting though as, while (almost?) every board manufacturer restricted it down from the 75W, their 'max' varied.
Some were 50W, some were 60W....some were lower.

I want to say it was HP's of the era that were limited to something like 25W.

Again, don't quote me on these numbers definitively, but you get the idea.

SO, I'm bumping this back up because after buying a new motherboard ( Asus z270 Prime ) the gpu is still not being detected, and AMDs installer wont let me even attempt to install drivers because it doesn't detect AMD hardware. This card was working in the last pc and the fan is still turning on, so I'm led to believe that it was shorted out at some point. If anyone has opinion, I'd appreciate it. I just want to know if I should throw it out or keep troubleshooting.
