Good evening,

Let me preface this by saying this issue has been ongoing for about a month, getting more and more severe until today, stuff hit the fan.

I received a MSI GTX 980 4gb gaming GPU for Christmas of 2015, and it worked fine with my old motherboard and other components/peripherals. When I graduated in June, I upgraded everything except the GPU and PSU to higher end tech. No issues still with my build.

Come thanksgiving time, my display randomly went black while playing League of Legends. I looked inside my case and noticed the GPU LED (MSI logo) was off. I restarted my computer and it lit up and I had no issues. About a week later it did it again. Over time, I eventually had to start opening my computer and just moving my GPU slightly, and I would have no issues. Now, I am back home for a break and this is recurring constantly. If I can even get the GPU to turn on, I get 10 minutes max on my computer before it shuts off. I tried looking around the forums, tried reseating the GPU, moving it to another PCIe slot, switching power cables, and trying different 8 pin connectors. Nothing seems to work indefinitely. Only switching the power cable itself (from the strip to the PSU,) seemed to work, but like everything else, only for a few minutes. Im hoping the pros here at toms can help me out with my dilemma. If you need more details, please do not hesitate to ask!

My specs:
GIGABYTE z170x Gaming 7
Intel Core i7 6700k
MSI GTX 980 4gb Gaming
32gb G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 3200
Corsair 120mm Liquid Cooling
ThermalTake 750w Bronze PSU
1tb HDD, 512gb SSD

Thank you so much!

Thank you for the hasty reply,

Unfortunately, I do not have another PSU readily available. I forgot to mention something as well. When I was fidgeting with different cable and connector combinations, when I would finish up and give my pc power, I would notice the little power LED on my motherboard, which is on when the motherboard has power, was also not turning on. A quick wiggle of the 24pin connector fixed it, however.

As for an alternate PSU, my friend cannot even get my graphics card to run in his build. With his PSU alone, I am not sure if t will work or not, but I will try to get access to it asap. Thank you!

Yep, i am waiting your reply. If the other PSU ran your Gpu just fine, then most probably your PSU might be having some issues. Never underestimate a power supply. It is a must to have a quality Psu. Good luck :)

Hey, I just tried things out with my friend. It turns out its most likely the GPU.

We first tried my setup just in case, reseated everything and replugged everything. Nothing.

We then used his power supply, no lights or display from the GPU.

We then tried his power supply and his GPU in my case to see if it was the motherboard. His GPU worked in both slots with no issues.

To confirm it wasn't a PSU problem, we rehooked up my PSU to my build with his card in, and his card still works with no issues.
