Hey all,

Yesterday I installed a new mobo and processor (i7 4790 from fx 6300) and before the change the GPU was working just fine. Now, the GPU doesn't work. It doesn't get recognized in the BIOS or device manager.

So I took my GPU and brought it to the computer at my lab. Hooked it up and NO DISPLAY. Not on the GPU or the mobo. This time it just completely prevented the display from working. After I took out the GPU from this computer, everything went back to working like a charm.

Any ideas whats wrong? Is my GPU dead? If so, how did it happen? I made sure to clear myself of static and worked on laminate.

Thanks for all your help

GPU model: Sapphire r9 280x
MOBO: Z97 anniversary (my computer) and H97 anniversary (lab computer)
CPU: i7 4790 (my computer) and i5 4460 (lab computer)

You should have a toggle switch on the graphics card its self.

The switch can do one or two things, it allows you to change from the first bios set on the card to a secondary bios if the first bios becomes corrupted.

Try switching the bios switch on the card to the second bios.
If the first bios has been corrupted in any way it prevents the card from being detected when placed in the Pci-e slot of the motherboard.

The second function the switch can perform on some cards is change the bios of the graphics card from a legacy bios to a Uefi enabled bios. for boards that will only support graphics cards with a Uefi compatible bios.

Make sure you have connected the eight pin E-Atx power block also from your PSU to the new motherboards Atx power connector block. The eight pin E-atx power block provides 75 watts of power to the Pci-e card slot of the motherboard so if it is not connected the bios will not see the card in the slot.

And that you have the required 12v Pci-e power connectors from the Psu fitted direct to the R9 280x card.

Check all of the points listed above and the card should work in the new motherboard.

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for the reply. The PSU connections are not the issue, everything is connected on both boards I tried.

Is there a chance that the GPU itself is dead? The fans still run and the light still turns on but still doesn't mean it works right?

I really hope my GPU isnt busted...
