[SOLVED] GPU only works in PCIE 1x to 16x adapter

Hello.

Recently, my graphics card stopped being detected in the MSI BIOS.
The GPU fans are running, as well as power cables are correctly connected from the PSU into the GPU. (6pin + 8pin)

The motherboard has 3 slots PCIE 16x (3.0) and 4 slots PCIE 1x (2.0).

  • The GPU works well if its connected via PCIE 1x-16x adapter (like in this video). Could play GTA V in this case.
  • All of the PCIE 3.0 slots are showing empty condition in BIOS board inspector.

In short: I don't want to keep my graphics card outside from computer case. Just want it to be detected by MOBO again.

My specs are EVGA GTX 780 6GB SC, i7 4790k and motherboard MSI Z97 G45. Thanks!

Solution
Have you tried your GPU in all of the x16 slots? Are you sure it's seated properly?

If yes try the following

1.) Reset your CMOS and then try to plug your GPU back in
2.) If possible, try another GPU in your motherboard
3.) Try your GPU in another motherboard. This step is probably not as needed because it sounds like the GPU runs fine when connect via the extension you mentioned.
