GPU only works without a driver

Hi,

yesterday my computer crashed to a screen of grey vertical lines and periodic audio noise while playing R6 Siege. Upon restart, the windows logo is shown and then I get a black screen (the monitors don't complain about a lack of signal, they just show a black image).

Safe mode works. Disabling the video driver in safe mode lets me boot in normal mode and I can switch to 1080p, but if I reinstall a driver the black screen comes back. The driver version I had before the problem happened was from 2018, I've also tried two versions from 2016 while troubleshooting. Running DDU and then installing a driver also didn't help.

I'm on windows 7 x64, video card AMD HD7870. CPU FX-6350, mobo 970A-UD3P. After all this driver fiddling I'd conclude it to be a GPU failure, but my processor/motherboard do not have integrated graphics as far as I can tell, so the fact that I'm getting video without a driver points against that..

Ideas?

It is GPU failure. The fact that you get display means it's slightly less severe failure (compare to total failure when you get no display no matter what), but failure nonetheless. Since your board has another x16 slot, you can move the card there and see if that changes anything in its behavior to rule out slot malfunction, but if it will not help, you got dying GPU.
