GPU Overheating & 5770 idle temp

My HIS 5770 is idling at about 50-55C (auto fan at about 42%), and I'm a bit concerned. It will reach about 75-80 under full load, and has trouble cooling down after a high temperature is attained.

It is sitting almost directly on top (half an inch of clearance) of my wifi card and it has even caused my wifi card to overheat during a stability test for my GPU.

I'm now wondering if my 5770's temperature is unusually high or if I should replace my wifi card with a USB adapter to give my GPU more breathing room. I did remove the wifi card and let the GPU idle and it still maintained the temp of 50-55C.

80°C is a bit high but still acceptable. You could try manually adjusting the fan speed to a bit higher, e.g. 60% if it's not too noisy. Your WiFi card doesn't seem to be causing a block in airflow.

Are you sure it is free from dusk?

Maybe re-apply the thermal paste will help...

What kind of case do you have? Normal ATX? Medium ATX? Mini/micro ATX?

It's free from dust, I recently installed it.

I just ran fur mark for about 3 minutes and received pretty bad results.

Faulty card? (I ran it at 1680x1050)

The fan speed was powerless to cool off the GPU, it was running at about 95% when it reached 80C.a

I just had a similar problem and Wa1, omgitzfatal and notty22 helped me. I had a Micro ATX case with a 5770 and the idle temp was ~55'C-60'C and when gaming it went from ~80'C - 98'C.

After switching to a mid tower with an intake fan, my temps dropped to about ~33'C-38'C when idling and usually in ~ 50's - 60s'C (and rarely 70'C) when gaming.

Maybe post a pic of the inside of your case it may help.

Inadequate cooling seems like the most likely answer.

As you can see, the GPU is a bit far away from the fans.

I've never installed a proprietary fan in my case, so I would need assistance there too.

From what ive heard, you have three options

1) Purchase a case with AT LEAST 3 fans. from what i can see, you can install 2 new fans and maybe a slot fan, which should help A LOT!!!

2) Liquid cooling

3) Afterstock GPU cooler ( Zalman released some good ones : http://www.zalman.com/ENG/product/CategorySecond_Pic.asp?categoryname=Coolers&categorySecond=CAS2 )

I have a XFX 5770, and cooling is no problem, but then I have a Gaming mid tower case with 6 fans

Try running the tests with the side open like in the pic and see how it is...

Well, now you must get a new fans and add it to your case...
Add another fans:
1 fan (intake) in the front case, 1 fan (exhaust) in the back case and 1 fan (intake) in the side one.

That's should help a lot, i guarantee it.

I ran it as you said and While playing a game where I was getting 80C I was now only getting 70C. I even saw the temperature drop 1 degree in-game, which never happened when the case was closed.


I've noticed the top half of the case is running fairly cool, but I can feel a lot of heat towards the bottom of it, near the GPU. I've also noticed the bottom of the case gets really hot too.

Looking at this fan currently...

Your case has mounts for fans at the front and rear for fans at those grills, so just get a couple 120mm fans and you're good to go. Some fans connect to the motherboard and then you can control from there, but you can also get fans with molex 4 pins to go straight into the PSU so they just run a constant speed all the time. The one you're looking it is perfect, just get 2 imo.

Weird. My 5750 idles at 50 degrees, but only hits about 65 under load. I have a three fan case. An apevia Dream3r or something i dunno. Bought the case cause it had a 4 star rating, 3 fans, and a clear sideport

I just noticed from the picture you posted that you do not have an intake or exhaust fan. By adding an intake and an out take fan this should help you solve the overheating problem. Try to get the identical fans for each, you will be looking for fans with a low dB-A like 20 and under, and a high CFM (Cubic Feet per minuet airflow).

I got this fan by Cooler master:

R4-L2R-20CK-GP SickleFlow 120 Blue LED (90 CFM & 19 bB-A)


Unfortunately they don't have that model in blue at new egg... instead they have his one, It looks exactly the same but the model number is different and it is rated with a lower CFM: 69 (instead of ~90 CFM): R4-L2R-20AC-GP SickleFlow 120 2000 RPM Blue LED


But they do have a red and green fans available at new egg with the same specs as the one i purchased but different colors:

120mm Green led fan (90 CFM & 19 bB-A)

120mm Red led fan (90 CFM & 19 bB-A)

Thanks, due to your post and others I bought two advised 120mm fans for my case. I'll get them in about 4 days - I'll post the results.

Just remember to put in 1 fan blowing air to inside the case and the other fan blowing air out of the case...
