So a few days ago i bought a used HD 7970 (reference cooler) and was running watch dogs at high settings, but today when I ran watch dogs, the temperatures reached 90+ degrees and my whole system turned off. I then ran unigine heaven and the same happened. What can i do as i cant seem to find a cooler and i cant afford a water cooling loop?!

Solution
Seems like they would both work, myself id prob get the one from quiet PC, just seems like a safer bet to me. it seems like it recommends getting a fan controller too.

Only fear is, if that doesn't do it, that card might be faulty, I'm hoping its just not passing heat correctly.

I would recommend using alcohol wipes to clean the heck out of it in any places that had a pad or grease, it needs to be clean 100%

If the card wasn't really cleaned well before applying the new pads and grease you may not need to purchase either of those cooling solutions.

Is the card stock right now? Has factory fans? (fans are working?) did you take it apart and do anything or did it come different than how stuck is supposed to be setup?

I'd make sure the fans are spinning first and foremost, if they aren't there is the issue, if they spinning slowly, that could be it.

If you bought it used w/ warranty or factory refurbished I'd see about a RMA.

What software are you using to read temps?

It has factory fans, i turned them too 100%, i took it apart to get the dust out (cause it was used) then replaced thermal pads and thermal paste and i used unigine heaven and speccy by piriform to read temps.

if its a poor case design you may not be moving enough air through the case leading to the internal case temp to rise making the GPU run hot. Now you can try upgrading the case fans or try running with the side panel off and see if that helps. If neither help you could always try a nzxt kraken g10 with a corsair H55 water cooler which is only about 100 bucks and did wonders for my crossfired 7950s. Do some reading before making that jump because you also need some small heatsinks for the vrm and memory blocks to help cool them as well.

Side panel is off now and i have 3 intakes and 1 out (intakes are 2x 120mm and 1x 140mm)

Was there thermal pads there already? or just paste if it wasn't cleaned and prepped well that very well maybe the issue. adding new grease over old causes air pockets and that could be the issue too.

I've got a fan controller and some arctic clean removal and purifier stuff and can order some thermal pads, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100mm-x-100mm-1mm-THICK-THERMAL-HEATSINK-TRANSFER-PAD-DOUBLE-SIDED-ADHESIVE-/190697537499?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2c66757fdb
Thanks a lot for the help too!!

that is the g10 bracket I use but you need to use a water cooler that supports the round asetek style cooler for it to work...most companys like nzxt and corsair sell coolers with the style block you need. I have my 7950s overclocked to 1200mhz on the core and 1700mhz on the memory with a 1.3v core and barely break 50c after hours of playing
