being summer at the moment and temperatures reaching around 20 degrees my GTX 970 4GB has recently been overheating causing my computer to crash, I've tweaked some of the settings with msi afterburner lowering the clock and uping the speed of the fans, I've also taken the side panel off the case and have got a small usb fan firing onto the gpu but I'm still having problems when I try to play somewhat demanding games, I don't want to watercool my pc as its very expensive and I don't have that kind of money to play with, I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions, all responses are really appreciated, thanks

There's only so much you can do, and it all revolves around feeding cool air to your GPU. Step one is to get cool air from outside your case blowing toward the GPU. This is generally accomplished with front intake fans in your case, or if you case supports it a side panel intake fan.

Beyond that, you can add something like this below your GPU which can greatly improve air flow to it: https://www.amazon.com/Titan-Adjustable-Dual-Cooler-TTC-SC07TZ/dp/B008A2TDC6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1500733020&sr=8-3&keywords=gpu+fan

Lastly, make sure you're getting the hot air OUT of your case via rear and/or top exhaust fans.
