Gpu suddenly maxing out

I hope someone can help with this odd issue that's cropped up. Sometimes while I'm playing a game my gpu suddenly maxes out and my performance drops like crazy. A reboot fixes the problem but eventually it happens again. As far as I know nothing has changed in my system aside from adding a couple of hard drives a while back. And it's not a vram issue as I've had my asus strix for almost a year and just started having problem now.

Asus strix 970 (560ti physx)
12 gigs Ddr 3

Sorry if I wasn't more clear. I can be playing a relatively light gpu game then suddenly the gpu maxes out and stays that way untill I reboot. I first had this happen a few weeks ago and its been happening fairly frequently since then.

I have this exact same problem with my gtx 680. the game is running fine, then suddenly dropping down to 10-20 fps. Afterburner shows that the gpu-usage spikes to 100, Fb usage goes up to around 90% from 30% while the gpu core clock dips down to 1/3.
It's really frustrating

Intel i7 930 @2.80 ghz
EVGA gtx 680 2gb
8 gigs ddr3

If a GPU is at 100%, you'll get lower FPS.

Yeah, i get that, but there's no reason for it to be at 100% The problem is that it goes up to 100% for no reason.

how the hell do you work that out...

if a game is gpu intensive and your cpu is doing all the work, your fps isnt going to be good, your gpu needs to be at 100% in order to get best performance. youre missing the point about the 3.5gb of vram on the 970, if his gpu is at 100% its likely that his vram could be over the threshold and therefore getting raped by the last slow 0.5, what games are you getting this issue on?

one example, is bf4, on certain maps, (shanghai) if you go into one corner, your fps tanks, and if you look your gpu usage drops by about 30%, if it was to increase the fps wouldnt drop, instead go higher.

If Vsync is on, 100% will get you lower FPS than your monitor refresh rate. If Vsync is off, and GPU is at 100%, you can get anywhere from 1-10000FPS.

Not OP, but I am getting this problem on several games, Fallout 4 and CS:GO are the most recent ones. It started a couple of days ago and seems to affect all the games

you recently updated your drivers? ive had this exact same issue and it turned out to be the drivers, it happened on all games, first game would be fine, then fps would drop to about 30, full pc reset would work then it would happen again, i can garuntee its the drivers and not your gpu, i should have read it more clearly.

no problem, i had this issue for weeks, it was so stupid.
