GPU Suggestion for an older rig and CPU Bottleneck

Hey Folks,

I am planning on upgrading my GPU and have my sights on nvidia 20xx series.

This is my rig,
i7-2600
16 GB DDR3 RAM
A loud painful (dont remember the manufacturer) HD7970 AMD 3GB GPU (upgraded from a quiet 2 GB 560 Ti MSI)
850W Corsair AX PSU
Dell Ultrasharp u2312hm
P8Z68 Deluxe Gen3 (PCIe 3.x) Mobo

Am I eligible for a 2070 or 2060 upgrade. Will there be a CPU bottleneck. If yes, whats the impact.

Thank you in advance kind souls.

Yeah, the RTX 2070 is definitely out if you want to avoid major CPU bottleneck. The bottleneck won't be quite so bad with the RTX 2060, but there will still be some. You're probably aiming a bit too high for the aging 2nd Gen Sand Bridge CPU.

The GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580/590 8GB would probably be the top card for you.

Thanks @clutchc. Are there any hardware side-effects (wear & tear of CPU; OR its(CPU/GPU) life time getting reduced) due to this 'bottleneck'

I might upgrade my PC may be in 2020, and then was planning to carry over this card say RTX 2060 (and my SSDs) to the new machine. That was the plan. If the 'bottleneck' is going to be bad for the PC, then I will have to think against this GPU upgrade now.

Bottleneck does no physical harm. Only harm is to your wallet if you spend too much on a gfx card you can't get full use from.

But since you say you are planning on a (complete ?) PC upgrade in the far future, the RTX 2070 might not be that bad of a move. You can always take it with you to the new build.

On the other hand, in another year or so, there might be a better gfx card you'll want for your new build instead of the "old ;)" RTX 2070. A tough choice only you can make.

I understand. Thank you @clutchc. As long as this "Bottleneck" thing does not harm my existing peripherals, I will either be going for a RTX 2060 or 2070.

Thank you again!

While you are here, I would like to ask if you have any suggestions for a good cabinet. OR do I start a separate thread.

Plus how do I mark this as resolved.

A 7970 is roughly equivalent to a 1050 Ti. So, for 1080p gaming, a move up to a 6gb 1060 or an RX 580 would be a substantial one. Consider that the 1070/2060 are really meant for 1440p gaming, or high refresh rate 1080p gaming. You have a 60hz monitor right?

Even if you build a new CPU/motherboard/DDR4 ram system, if you're still at 60hz 1080p then the 1060 or 580 will get the job done.

Full tower, mid tower, mATX tower?
Are you in the US? Or UK maybe?

Thank you @dontlistentome . Sorry I could not respond sooner, as I had issues logging in and was out of station as well. My idea is to go for a future proof GPU, which can deliver the same performance as 1060/1070 max on my current rig, and then take it forward when I upgrade my PC.

My Monitor is a Dell UltraSharp u2312hm; and when I build a new one, I will definitely go in for a higher refresh rate one.

Thank you @clutchc. And sorry, I could not get back sooner.

My current is Graphite Series™ 600T Mid-Tower Case

I am looking for something similar, with Bluray drive bay and USB-C connector in the I/O panel (and VR provision as well if feasible). The reason I am mentioning this is because, whatever current cabinets I have looked at, does not seem to have Bluray drive slot.

My current I/O panel is broke, so I have to open the cabinet and power it from the motherboard everytime there is a power outage. Otherwise its always in hibernation or sleep.

And I am from India.
