I am a newb when it comes to this so bare with me lol.

Here are my computer specs

CPU:i5-3750k
Motherboard:ASRock z77 extreme6 LGA1155
Memory:G.Skill sniper series 8gb 2x4
Storage 1:Samsung 840 series 120gb SSD
Storage 2:Western digital 2tb hdd
Video card:Sapphire radeon 7970 GHz vapor-x 6gb.
Power supply:pC power and cooling Silencer MK II 950W 80+ silver.

I am currently using my 60 inch plasma 1080p. (Yeah, not really high resolution which raises more questions then it answers.)
Maybe my expectations were a little high when I built this computer last year.

I was under the impression I would be able to max out basically any game. I get around 25-35 when playing games like The witcher 2 and Crysis 3 on the highest settings. What surprised me was when I tried playing tomb raider on the highest settings I would get around 30-35 fps as well. What finally made me start to really question this was when I couldn't even get a consist 60 fps (I would have 55 and I would go down to around 40 when playing Amnesia a machine for pigs. I have 3 questions.

1.Some of the features that would drastically reduce framrate (AA,Anisotropic, etc.) can you even see the benefit of them on 1080p TV?

2.Do I need to get a new GPU to max out these games. If so what gpu would you recommend?

3.I am considering getting a gaming monitor for some of the fast paced multiplayer games. Is 144hz worth it?

Solution
the witcher 2 will kill any gpu if you enable ubersampling. as for crysis 3 i think it is the most demanding game right now with max setting. even my 660 SLI cannot get constant 60fps. and i already tone down AA with that. as for tomb raider try disabling SSAA. as for amnesia i don't know but i don't think that game really heavy on graphic. as for your other question:

1. it depends on you. but when playing with monitor you the situation is different since you did not stare your monitor from a far like TV.

2. some of the game you tried to max out is known to kill gpu on max setting. if i were you i will keep current gpu and will see for upgrades when 20nm gpu comes out

3. personally i can't say anything about this since i never try...

1. Yeah you kinda will see a difference of graphical fidelity if you turn AA and stuff off and on at 1080p especially on a tv of that size.
2. You really shouldn't need a new gpu to max out those games however witcher and crisis do require some serious horsepower to run at 60fps, I have a 780ti and I don't think I can run them at 60fps
3. You should only consider getting a 144hz monitor if you are getting that sort of fps in the games you play if not then stick with a 60hz monitor and go for a nice looking IPS monitor

those two games are very cpu and gpu demanding, those feature you listed will definitely help on 1080p on a big screen since the pixels will be bigger than if you were playing on a 1080p monitor for me cyrsis 3 still kicks my @ss using 2 7970s overclocked maxed out, I only get about 60 and even then you can turn the AA up max.

If you can grab a used 7970 for cheaper, the prices have soared since the new cards are out, i grabbed my 7970 dual x OC for 245 which was a steal. those two cards will be a better option than grabbing a single high end card
since it will be still faster than a single 290x. also I havent run into any games besides bf3 that dont scale well with xfire but even sli doesnt work well on bf3. bf4 plays awesome.

as far as a monitor grab a 27" 1440p, i grabbed this exact monitor for 289 from this seller with no dead pixels etc and the xstars and crossovers will overclock to 120hz, I only have it to 96hz though http://www.ebay.com/itm/121232555003?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649.

It also arrived in 5 days haha.

also why did you grab a 6gb card?

I thought there was a chance I would do multi-monitor.

3. personally i can't say anything about this since i never try monitor with higher frequency cap than 60hz. but the benefit would be much smoother experience (this is from people actually owning the monitor) and no tearing when the fps exceed 60fps.
