Gpu sweet spot

So I'm having to RMA my MSI GTX 980 ti gaming and MSI state that if they can't repair the card they'll replace it or upgrade it with a fee.

If it's the latter, replace/upgrade is there a bang for buck sweet spot in the gpu market? I won't be able to afford much extra but I reckon a hundred on top of the 980's market value should be possible.

Any recommendations?

They will probably struggle to provide you with anything less than a 2070 which I would consider a decent upgrade.
A 1080 wouldnt be sufficient enough to warrant any money spent
A 1080Ti here there is very little out in the market left.
2080 If at a resonable price increase... this would be a the best.
2070 is my guess which they will offer if they cannot repair the gpu.
