GPU temp and passive cooling ruined motherboard?

My old video card fried, so i bought new and cheap one, Palit Geforce 210 with passive cooling.

I used it month or more and wondered it temp went very high. I read from the forums that they can handle higher temps, but eventually my computer started to shut off.

It appeared that capacitor just over the GPU passive cooler was swollen. After testing with different parts i made it clear, that mobo was dead.

Now my brother gave me computer sans video card, and i placed gf 210 into it. Similarly, it has capacitors on motherboard all around passive cooler.

Question is: do i have killer video card? 😀 Will my mobo die!

I suspect there was no where for the heat to escape to inside the case. It simply rose up and cooked the cap. That is one of the drawbacks to passive cooling. No method to discharge the heat unless you have an extremely well-ventilated case.
