This past week i've been experiencing nonstop crashes on my PC while gaming, while im playing games such as Rainbow Six Siege and GTA V it'll run the game for around a minute then suddenly a loud fan noise will appear, screen goes black then the computer restarts.

I checked my GPU and CPU temps and at idle my GPU runs at around 50 degrees whole my CPU runs mid 30s idle. While running my games the GPU then steadily spikes all the way up to 101 degrees and it is around that point that my computer shuts down, CPU stays at around mid 60s while gaming.

I tried clearing out my computer of dust including my GPU's heatsink and fans yet that seemed to make no difference and im clueless as to why this problem has only started recently, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Specs:

Nvidia 660 GTX
AMD FX-8350 black edition with stock CPU cooler

Solution
Download MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision. What percentage is your GPU fan running at? I suspect that it's not spinning at all. I could be wrong, but I believe maximum operating temp for your FX-8350 is 62C and for your GTX 660 is 97C. Your GTX 660 should be no-where near that temp obviously. You're sure it's your GPU that's restarting your system?

I'm guessing that excess heat is restarting your CPU, motherboard VRM, etc.

Either your GPU fan(s) aren't running or your case fans aren't.

I have no experience with revitalizing GPU fans. What is your GPU vendor? What is the manufacturer and model # of your power supply? The 6 pin PCIe connector on the GTX 660, unplug and replug it in. Can you physically turn the GPU fans by hand, or is there excess resistance? There should be a cable running from the fan to the card, via a small connector on the card - Check that the plug is properly connected to the card. GTX 660 came out in September of 2012; that was 4 years 3 months ago. When precisely did you purchase it? If 3 years or less, there is a good chance that it's under warranty. If my suggestions don't improve your situation, then contact the vendor and ask for their assistance in getting the fans to work again. Perhaps there is a firmware update they may have to resolve such an issue. Ultimately you may need to simply replace the card, but do not continue to game on it unless this issue with the fans is resolved. Please.

ah heck, i have no clue. The website I bought it from almost 3 years ago never stated the vendor only that it was a 660 upgrade... When I bought the system it came with a GTX 660 box but had no vendor on the box just a normal Nvidia GTX box. I just checked the card itself and all it has it two G's, one on each of the fans. So im not sure if that is maybe Gigabyte? no idea sorry.

Take a photo and upload it to imgur or some other site and share the link here. Perhaps the card was purchased directly from Nvidia's store. That's certainly possible. Live chat with their support, which is 24 hours. Communicate with them right now: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/chat/chat_launch/

Give them the serial number on the back and tell them your problem. Ask if it's still under warranty. If it is then you'll get a replacement or at least a repair. If it's not under warranty then ask them for suggestions to fix it. If they give you canned responses or non-sense suggestions, then simply thank them and call to speak to US support during normal business hours. Please respond back after you chat with them tonight.

I couldn't even find a result by doing a google image search, where it literally searches the indexed internet by the image itself:

Ok i spoke to the Nvidia support, he said I need to ask about warranty through the manufacturer and I showed him the photo, apparently the manufacturer is Palit. Although none of their products matched my card... I guess i'll talk to their support.
