Question GPU to AV reciever with HDMI cable causing issues

I'll try to keep this as brief as possible. My PC (OS: Windows 10, CPU: Ryzen 5 3600, GPU: Radeon RX 580) is connected to my AV receiver ( Onkyo TX-SR508). I am using the display port on the GPU to connect to my 144hz 2k monitor, and HDMI from the GPU to the receiver for audio. So far the audio is great, but it is causing choppiness when playing games.

I tinkered with display settings and changed it from extend display to duplicate display to no avail. To confirm that the HDMI connection is causing the issues I disconnected it in game and the game instantly became smooth. I am starting to think that somehow using the HDMI from the GPU which can only support 60hz is somehow interfering with the display ports 144hz but was hoping someone here with greater knowledge could confirm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just as an initial look at things try using Resource Monitor. Overview tab is a good starting point.

Observe system/component parameters while you work through the various connection schemes and display settings.

Just be sure to allow the system to stabilize as between changes and change only one thing at a time.

Do leave the Resource Monitor window open and dragged to one side to maintain a continual view.

You may need to experiment a bit to get things arranged and focused as necessary.

Look at what is happening as the choppiness comes and goes.
