System:

q6700
4GB ram
4 SATA HDD
500W PSU (Earthwatts 80)
24" LCD monitor (DVI)
37" LCD TV (HDMI)

Current GPU: Nvidia 7900GS-OC (specs at 7900GT levels)

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU. I am interested in upscaling DVD/video quality, and I'm a casual gamer. I know I can but an ATI4850 for around $100, but I'm wondering if I can get something cheaper that still outperforms my current GPU in Age of Empires 3, Battlefield 2, etc. I'd like to keep heat & fan noise to a minimum since the machine sits in my living room. Any suggestions? I typically shop Newegg, but I'll go to any reputable seller.

if you want cheaper than my recomendetion is 9800gt but 9800 gtx or 4850 is best performance cards for your money.

Upscaling DVD's and HD play back doesn't need a 4870 so it really comes down to what games you play.

Anyways I would suggest the 4770, or even a cheap 9800 gt. If you get a 9800 GTX be careful some models are really...really high in price and still there are better performers for only 20-30 dollars more.

If you plan to play games on the large TV I would really go for something like the 4890. Depending on what games you play. That would be helpful if you said which.

Sorry, what I meant was if he plays anything more demanding. I didn't make that clear, Age of Empires 3 is more CPU demanding and Battlefield 2 can be played on almost anything fairly well. However if he plays something like Far Cry 2, or something like that and didn't think to say that at the time because maybe he doesn't play it as often or something then it would be a different story.

I somehow spaced and didn't finish what I was meaning to post which was "you said which newer or more demanding ones."

If you think your will pick up something more demanding then what you listed I would say 4870. It is a really good price and you will be set for a while. If you want to save about $30-50 bucks I would say the 4850.
