Hey yall first time poster long time lurker. Hows everyone doing?

Anyways im looking to upgrade my Gtx 960 2gb. My goal is to achieve stable 144 hz on max settings. (mainly league of legends)
Currently my fps is around 100 avg for LOL at max settings.

i borrowed a friends evga 1070 ftw. i was about to get stable 120 hz. but sometimes dips to 100. any recommendations? do i need to purchase a 1080 to get stable 144 at max settings for league of legends?

my current setup.

plus
Dual monitor set up.
evga 650 plat psu.

if possible the best value for the money. not trying to buy a 800 gpu to play league of legends at max settings on 144 hz

thanks in advance.

a 1070 should have completely destroyed that game

a gtx 960 should be able to get over ~200 fps ultra 1080p in lol

No such thing as stable fps. In any game there's going to be highs and lows depending on exactly how much detail there is on the screen compared to the detail settings implemented. Standing in a field of grass that's affected by wind with a long viewing distance and ultra detail settings will lower fps on any gpu compared to same settings but standing in a desert area. So if average fps was 180, in grass it'd be 140, in the desert it'd be 220.

This is before any monitor considerations. Even 1080p/60 you'll still get the same fps, but you'll only see a consistent 60,as the minimums are beyond the monitors capability to reproduce over 60fps. With a 1080p/144Hz Monitor, you'll need cpu/gpu capable of 144fps minimums and the detail settings per game to allow that to happen.

With LoL, a 1070 on that Ryzen with ram at 2666MHz shouldn't have any issues with over 144fps minimums. Bump OC to @ 3.8GHz and allow the ram to be taken advantage of. Lower some detail settings such as viewing distance from 10k to 5k, you'll barely see any difference, but it's huge on the cpu. Play around with AA, AF, mxaa, fxaa, smaa etc to see what exactly is more beneficial to your viewing speeds yet doesn't make stuff look bad.

It's going to. Any gpu will dip. The more details on screen, the more the detail settings, the harder the gpu has to work, the lower the fps. Even a 1080ti gets dips of min/max frames. Has nothing to to with refresh or resolution, has everything to do with content. The only way regresh/resolution affects fps dips is severity. A 1080ti playing minecraft on 1080p will still see dips at times, but it might be as little as 500fps dipping to 495fps. My 660ti sees dips, from 300fps to 270fps. Until the minimum fps exceeds the refresh of the monitor, you will 'see' the dips. Above monitor refresh, you will not see them, you'll see a consistent result of 60 or 144 or whatever, only a counter will tell you the fps moved.

If you are dipping from 120 to 100 at times, that's exactly normal behavior.

You could use a gtx1080ti and not get STABLE fps. It's physically impossible. The only thing you can do is use a gpu large enough to accommodate your desired settings to maintain fps above the monitor refresh. That'll give you a viewable consistent 144fps, even though the counter in game will be bouncing between 150 fps and 200fps. Either that or use a gtx1070 and lower some detail settings from max, things like viewing distance, which relaxes the usage on cpu/gpu, allowing for higher fps. So instead of gaming at 120fps and dropping to 100fps, you'll game at 140fps and get drops to 120fps.

But if all you are looking at is the in game fps counter, that's going to bounce, no matter what.

yeah im finding it hard to believe your not sustaining 144fps. my 980ti runs battlefield 4 maxed out at 3440x1440 and only rarely dips below my 100hz refresh rate. i suspect some kind of driver conflict or your cpu is holding you back. what cpu do you have? the 1070 is roughly twice as fast as a 960 so a 20fps gain points to a bottleneck somewhere. your 960 should be killing that game.
