[SOLVED] GPU upgrade GTX 1060 or similar for 6yo system

Hi community,

Why Are You Upgrading: I want to upgrade my GPU because my current GPU is starting to make an unreasonable amount of noise and the fan is acting up. It sounds like rattling and is caused by vibrations in the plastic around the card. Have taken it apart, there are no loose parts, and while I might be able to replace the fan to fix the problem, I am 99% sure that the fan acting up has caused temperatures go close to or above 100 C. I am mostly curious whether (i) the rest of my build still warrants an upgrade and (ii) the upgrade I have in mind (GTX 1060) is a good fit for the rest of the build. I am of course open to any suggestions.

A GTX 1060 will be ok, with such a system, I would think.

GTX 1060 is absolutely fine. I have a GTX 980Ti (~GTX 1070 performance) in my almost 10 year old system (it is still on PCIE 2.0 and RAM running @1400Mhz!) and runs great, about the same as my i7 6700 with GTX 1070 or 4770K with 980Ti.

I would focus on the GPU, 1060 is still a solid GPU for 1080p, even the 3GB version is fine.

Get a 580, they are dirt cheap....a top premium like the Red Devil goes for little more than 200€.

They are faster than 1060 6Gb on most recent games...
3Gb shouldn't be a option considering most modern games eat up over 3Gb.

Actually most modern games do not use more than 3GB @1080p. As an owner of several 3GB GPUs in addition to 4/6/8/11GB ones, 3GB is absolutely good to go @Very High minimum on 3GB cards.. Also the 580 and 1060 6GB are pretty evenly matched

Also keep in mind that the power draw on the RX 580 is pretty massive for its midrange performance; it draws more than a GTX 1080:

I don't know how Radeon cards stack up to Nvidea but I upgraded my ancient system running an AMD FX-6350 from a GTX 950 to a 1060 and was surprised at the increase in performance I had. I had been led to believe I would see little improvement. As an example FPS in Heaven Benchmark nearly but not quite doubled for me.
I am a modest gamer and found my game play to be much smoother.
Don't know if that helps.
