GPU upgrade maybe (Far Cry 4)

Currently I run the following:

i5 2500K 3+ ghz CPU
ASUS P8Z68 V-Pro Motherboard
GTX 670 MSI Twin Frozer
850 Watt PSU
8GB DDR3 RAM
SSD's for all games and Window files.

I run FarCry 4 fine but do notice some stuttering at times - the FPS isn't as smooth as it could be and it certainly does struggle briefly when loading a new area, but generally it runs fine.

I'm thinking a quick upgrade to make it run smoothly and prepare for future releases even though currently I only own Alien Isolation, Far Cry 4, Battlefield 4 and Civ 5 Brave New World for recent games.

I would have thought the CPU was sufficient despite being bought in 2011, but you might say otherwise. Should I go all out and grab a GTX 980 perhaps (Had bad times with AMD in the past and heard that far Cry 4 doesn't like AMD cards).

Looking for the most cost effective upgrade route, budget is fairly high without going ridiculous.

Solution
670 sli should be about as powerful as a gtx 980, at least according to Toms hierarchy chart.

I think that would be the ideal solution if you're using a 1080p monitor, You should be able to pick one up for 100 bucks or so.

Far cry doesn't run "smooth" on any systems, so Regarding that I would advise against upgrading.

You could try getting a higher overclock on your cpu, and if you still want a gpu upgrade, getting another 670 second hand might be something to consider.

But you can't go wrong with a gtx 970 or 980 either.

One interesting thing to note is that the stutter is more prevalent on the expensive i7 rather than the cheaper i5 or AMD processors. It isn't the problem of your graphic card, stutters happen even on my friend's GTX Titan. Microsoft will soon release DX 12 and it makes sense to wait till DX 12 graphics card come out, else you will be left with dated hardware. If you are not having any serious problems with your graphics card don't upgrade now.
